Turbo compressor surge? Weird noises (engine bay video attached)

My 335is is making weird whooshing noises, sounds like turbos are rapidly gasping for air. This started a few days after fixing a boost leak (missing o ring in charge pipe), checked coupler tightness, reseated charge pipe, opened up TIAL BOV assembly (spring was good, gaskets in place), all vacuum lines in good condition.

This noise occurs at around 20%-40% throttle, no codes, and the car pulls strong reaching 22psi. No boost-leak symptoms. Running Pure 600's which are 6k miles old.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Since going Hybrid I have this issue myself. I have relocated inlets so the noise you're hearing is from the filters itself and not the blow off valve. Mine is obvious it's coming from the passenger side relocated filters.

Subbed - I have this same noise on cold start idle with my brand new Pure600s. I’m stumped… I’ve posted a few times here and reached out to both Pure and Wedge, neither of which were particularly helpful.

Hoping you can find an answer.

What size spring are you running in your Tial BOV? Mine made the same fluttering BOV noise when I had the black spring in it which was way too light.......you should be running the 10psi "plain colored" spring. At idle, is your BOV wide open, or closed/almost closed?

Bump - not sure where OP went but for what it’s worth, I’m running Forge DVs 50/50 with original (pink) springs. My pistons are hard closed at idle, even on the softest setting.

Hoping someone has heard of this issue before. It’s giving me anxiety about my build.

Were the springs included with the Tial Q box or you have to buy it seperately?

My Tial BOV from BMS came with the plain spring installed...it's 10psi if I remember right. I bought the lighter 8psi black spring for testing....it was way too light, so I put the original one back in.

Okay so I bought my Tial from BMS I wonder if it has the plain spring in it already. I haven't removed it to check, but I should.

I'm not sure what spring it has (was a plain/silver colored spring?) purchased from VRSF. At idle, my BOV is closed. What's confusing is I've never had problems with it up until now if that's even the issue. What lb spring do you recommend?

Also, I should mention that I found one of my inlet caps/vacuum plugs ripped up and the clamp that holds the vent hose going to the rear inlet broke off. Replaced these two and the sound still persists. The noise is coming from the driver side of the car so i'm hoping it's the spring.

Stop playing with BOV springs ,nothing to do with it.You can tune this out. Its compressor surge. Your tuner can play with settings to mitigate it.
The highflows have a pretty big compressor wheel shoved in for the turbine size and the fact the turbine housing is stock still.
I had the slightest surge at partial throttle at certain airflow, had it tuned out easy. But not a big deal if you just avoid causing it ,this is also easy to avoid. Surge isnt wonderful for turbo life at full throttle but, its not under load by the sounds or at too high a turbo shaft speed either.
Very common on highflow style upgrades with twin turbos on a number of platforms inc. Rb26 gtrs. Pumping more air than the motor wants so you can tune it out pretty easy.

Very true. My tuner tweaked around the WGDC at cruising and such and it resolved it.

Could it be a pinched/crushed inlet?

I have the same issue and really keen to know how to solve it

No , its just compressor surge. Solve it by tuning it out.

Just updating the thread for anyone who finds it later and has the same issue. If you’re having the surging on cold start idle, turning on the cold start delete setting in MHD will solve the cold start surging.

I don’t yet know if my car is going to surge at light load as OP’s does, but if it does I’ll update the thread with the MHD wastegate rattle fix settings I try using to fix it.

So my car has been down for a failing hpfp, fitting a new one this week. I've had cold start delete since they were installed so never experienced surging on cold start up. I did mess with the wastegate rattle settings and it minimized the surging about 90% but I felt like the car ran horribly (felt laggy). Will be working with my tuner once new HPFP is installed hoping that will solve it.

Also, I reached out to someone who experienced the same issue with the same exact symptoms and he said he was able to fix the surging with a modified 6 psi black spring.

I'm 99% sure the black spring is an 8psi spring. Give it a try, but on my car it was way too light, and caused all kinds of flutter issues at part throttle.
