CD changer - or MP3

Hi
got a e93 330i sport recently. It has Nav professional.

Car does not have a CD changer, just a front loading single CD and a DVD drive, the latter has the nav disc in.

Dealer quoted over £700 to fit the 6CD changer

But I've also heard that the standard system may be able to play MP3's.

Can I have a bit more info on the possibility of playing MP3's from the unit as is.

Is this possible? Which format? What bitrate?

Ta for any advice

You should be able to play MP3's - suggest you try it by burning a standard ISO disk (e.g. with Nero).

Exact file specs are in the manual, I think you can play up to 320kbs bitrate and you can store them in sub-folders as well.

Yep, they play completely standard CD's, just burn the normal way.

One thing to remember, if you take the navigation DVD out you can replace with a DVD full of MP3s instead. There's a fair few albums you can fit on a DVD in MP3 Downside obviously no sat nav!

(this is all on my pro nav, 07... not sure about the brand new system)

If its a brand new car the USB retrofit would be a much cheaper option than a 6CD player?

Standard system plays mp3s. Not sure about bitrate but on a standard CD you can fit around 13 albums.

It's good too as you can list all the albums out and pick and choose tracks, as the standard system displays text. It's fairly quick navigating with the buttons and right hand knob

You'd think so, but it cost over 700 plus VAT when I enquired

If you can play MP3s with your stereo then I wouldn't bother with the 6CD changer.

1 CD will hold 10 or more albums in a resonable MP3 format. And you can buy a LOT of blank CDs for £700.

I have about 8-10 CDs kicking around in the car - > 80 Albums. You'd need 80 CDs littering your car, and probably RSI from re-filling your CD changer cartridge ...

The USB opens the door to adding a memory stick/iPod and the possibilty of accessing a simply HUGE music libraray - I just don't own enough albums to make use of that.

Exactly, if you really want more don't bother with CD's anyway, just get a cheap ebay ipod and have your local dealer install it in the glovebox. Never have to bother changing CD's or even burning them.

thanks guy's.

I'm gonna give the CD changer a miss and burn MP3's onto a few CD's.

Was at the dealer looking at possible boy's toys

1. The USB option was £230 for the unit (65410445465) +£308 for the high charging hands free (84109200822) (this second unit is needed as I have prof nav).

2.CD changer (65120429253) was £433 + fitting of £280

3. The alpine amp and speaker kit was £246. (65410445684)

4. No retrofit for TV function available.

Of all of these options its the Alpine amp/speaker kit I'm most interested in but waiting to hear reviews etc.

do a search, Im pretty sure a member did this not too long ago. I did the blaupunkt upgrade and its a good one, quite a few others have gone this route too... again, a search for blaupunkt should get quite a few hits
