Emissions in MA

Hoping for some help,

Currently running vrsf catted down pipe and I’m almsot 100 percent sure it’s throwing my service engine soon light. I bought catted so I wouldn’t have this problem. Do I just need to clear the service engine soon light and go to the inspection before it goes back on? I’m due for an inspection in MA and any insightful information would be greatly appreciate on how to solve the problem

That kinda depends on the station and when they plug into the OBD reader they look at miles since engine light has been reset.

In MA you will get a safety inspection only if your car is more than 15 years old. They typically jack up front end and check for loose suspension parts.

If your car is less than 15 years old you will have an emissions test. They will plug in and look at your obd2 readiness. If your emissions monitors are nor ready, you will fail. I believe you can have one not ready.

They are cracking down on this stuff. I just got rejected for emissions and have to Goto a MAC center for further inspecting…..

The key is how long it takes after clearing the SES for it to come back on.

You cannot just clear the SES and immediately go for inspection because clearing resets all the OBDII emission monitors. You have to drive the vehicle around until they become "ready". At that point, the DME will test parameters. With cats removed, the cat monitor will fail immediately after it becomes ready and the SES will come back on. In your case, because the high flow cats have some functionality, it may take longer.

So, to pass inspection, you need to be at that sweet spot: enough time after clearing for the monitors to become ready but not enough time after becoming ready to fully execute a test and fail it.

By far the simplest thing and best thing to do is buy and install the MHD flash system. It will allow you to set the cat monitor so it is permanently "not ready". If the monitor is "not ready" it will never complete the test, fail and set the SES.

In most states, including MA, you are allowed 1 "not ready" monitor. Thus, if there is nothing else wrong (i.e. a different monitor "not ready"), you will pass inspection.

That's more in depth than I knew. Mass is craking down on a lot of things, they mentioned my rear tires were borderline not passing because they were slightly in the arches they thought the car was too low. Factory M sport suspension on an e91 and I had a bunch of clothes donations in the back for Salvation army. Took em out and car came up a bit.

Nobody wants to loose their inspection station so they are following the rules.

Worth noting that almost every state has inspections and there are very good reasons for it. You might attend to all the safety issues your vehicle has but not every one does, or even notices that something requires attention.

There is plenty about Massachusetts that I find irritating but I do not see how state-mandated automobile inspection services involve a "cash grab", an undue "taxation" without representation or the "redistribution of wealth" in which the state makes a unilateral decision about who has excess and relieves them of it.

weird I pass fine with not cats, a single turbo, and a lowered car just fine...

Install MHD and get the car tuned.

You can also make or buy a DP fix.

What is the code you are getting from the CEL?

I'm also in MA and was able to get my car to pass. Send me a PM. You can get DP fix or a certain tune and pass emissions no problem.

Probably. Dinan tunes are basically worthless so they probably pass just fine. No offense, as it sounds like you have a Dinan tune.

The N55 passes basically the same way as the n54 AFAIK. 1 readiness 'not ready' which is the cat.

On a side note, has anyone else received an email from the RMV about an inspection sticker expiration notification?

Sticker expired in October but car is away until the spring. Not sure if it's even worth filling out abs sending in the "off-road vehicle form" if I'm just going to get it out of storage in April/May and drive it to get inspected that week.

Yup. Same. Will get it inspected in the spring when it comes out of hibernation.

You're not filling out the form? Seems only beneficial if a cop pulls you over, which for me is rare where I live

Pretty much let's the RMV know that the car is not being driven…because they need to know everything nowadays. I guess if a cop pulls you over it would be helpful.

But then he would know you are driving it? Or is the idea it gives you 1 free pass to drive it to a gas station/inspection station?

I still don't get it. F off state Gov. If I don't want it inspected that is my business not yours.

The reminder is nice, just not the form...which I still do not understand it's purpose...

Kinda think it's telling all the folks that were under the assumption that covid has given them a two year pass on inspections to get it done. Cops these days do not pull cars over unless it's blatantly needs to be done.

State needs to fill it's coffers and they want that money.
