There should be. As if I remember correctly AWS has over 90% of the cloud hosting market. As big as Azure and Google are, they don't have any where near the market share as AWS.

It's actually not quite that high. It's around 33% or so but still a huge chunk of the cloud infrastructure services market. Hell, Tinder was brought down! What to do.

On a serious note though, it's a reminder of how vulnerable we really are. I can see it being a hack by the Chinese or Russian government for example. The chaos this type of downtime creates is mind boggling.

I guess I misread or remembered incorrectly the market share AWS holds from some article I had read.

And yet people will fail take caution once it's all fixed and go back as nothing happened.

I'm not so sure about this case. It's not like AWS doesn't have a robust system in place. It'll be interesting to find out what the root cause of this was.

vreihen16 , any thoughts?

They haven't provided an official RCA and don't have an ETA for full recovery yet, but we were told an increase in traffic has caused some internal networking issues.

I've heard nothing yet, and am an Amazon AWS customer both at work and personally.

None of my AWS workloads have been impacted by this, because I'm smart enough to keep my stuff out of Amazon's Northeast Virginia (near Washington DC) data center. No way will my data get wiped out by a hurricane, or nuked by some rogue nation or terrorists!

There's plenty of lessons to be learned from the OVH data center fire last March, which took down Europe's largest cloud host and sent lots of companies scrambling to dig out their disaster recovery plans.....

Threw a wrench in my morning meetings as we sue Smartsheet which is hosted on AWS. Apparently my wife electronic medical records charting system is also on AWS so her clinic was unable to log into that system to chart, refill prescriptions, etc. Total mess.

I saw a twitter post from someone who claimed that their ISP somehow ran through AWS so taking the internet down also took their Roomba down which rendered them unable to vacuum their floor. Pretty funny, sad, and scary all at once. IOT is great and all until the "I" goes down.

All of this is ironic when you really think about it. Using these services is supposed to give you a peace of mind but I suppose it's primarily more about convenience? I think I'd choose more robust security protocols as opposed to convenience. I realize I'm probably over simplifying this but considering how many system failures have happened over the years, some of them due to hacks, you'd think these entities would be more prepared for catastrophic events. Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket (AWS).

Well because I use the Jobber systems for both of my companies we couldn't do any quotes, invoicing or client messaging. Held up over a 100 invoices but really no biggie. Was able to do other things that needed done.

So this is why I actually had to press buttons on my air fryer and turn off the basement lights by hand earlier? I need to apologize to Alexa for calling her names again...

Might just be coincidence but have you noticed that most of the AWS outages over the past few years have been that East Coast data center? My company has its data on the West Coast, UK, and Singapore. Never a problem.

Not saying this is the cause but might explain the fragility of what is going on with that AWS' data center.

Yes. But I'm assuming many of the data centers in the Ashburn area are tying into a similar peering system that MAE-East offered.
