Passed NJ state inspection with NO cats (catless) and MHD tune

So I have a 2017 BMW X4 M40i with full bolt ons and fully catless, running MHD stage 2+ tune. Was due for inspection this month and I was stressing out being catless. I just decided to go get the inspection and see what happens, so in case I fail, I would then try other things before the month ends.

I have been on the same settings of my tune for a long time without making any changes.

I went to Richard's Service Station at 1459 Springfield Ave, Maplewood, NJ 07040. Never been there before, but I opted for a private business location rather than a state run service like at the DMV. I was in and out in 10 min. My car looks heavily modded but they never asked any questions about my mods. They did not do any visual inspections and did not look under the car to see if I have cats.

Anyway, the guy connected his OBDII cable to my car then ran the program on his computer. He then went inside and came out with my new inspection sticker a few minutes later. I have a heavy tint on my front windshield as well and he helped cut out a square piece on the tint to put the sticker on the car. I already had a cutout in my tint for the old sticker, but the new stickers are much bigger so he helped widen the cut. He didn't bother me about having the tint or any other visible mods.

So I guess if you are catless and have an MHD tune then you can pass no problem. This place was about 40 min from my house and I also drove agressively there to make sure my engine and exhaust were nicely warmed up before I got there. Again, I have not played around with any settings on the MHD tune for a while. Do not clear any codes and do not reset anything, otherwise you will have to do a bunch of drive cycles to get everything back in shape.

Attached is a picture of my MHD error codes. Taken right before the inspection. I think that if your MHD readout is the same as mine, you will pass New Jersey emission testing via OBDII. Even though the readout for the Catalyst says "not available", I guess it did not make a difference. When I was done I left. They never gave me any paper showing any codes or any info as to what I passed or potentially failed. NJ does allow for 1 mistake and you can still pass. They gave me a receipt. It cost $75 for the service.

Sounds to me like they helped you out, overlooked a lot of things... you are not doing them any good by putting it in publicly. Technically he can be revoked for doing that.

Ya, definitely take out the guy's business name and location...

Great news to hear you passed and certainly helpful for anyone else looking for information but you're not doing the dude any favors saying that he essentially is passing people who shouldn't be passed.

They absolutely did not do me any favors. I don't know them and they don't know me. They had no reason to do me any favors. I passed simply because in NJ I am allowed to have 1 fault/error on the test and my 1 error was not having cats. Their computer simply reads out a PASS or a FAIL. They did everything by the book. No need to remove their name and address since they are not some shop that overlooks things and lets people get free passes. I passed and others with my setup can and will pass too...at any inspection station, not just the one.

Sounds like they didn't verify cats, did not verify ride height, did not verify audible exhaust noise, turned a blind eye to the fact that you have heavy tint all around, especially the windshield and cut a square for it... what? State Inspections don't take 10 minutes unless your car is a brand new stock car. He's actually supposed to look at everything. The tint and cat thing would get his inspection license revoked. I'm glad he helped you out and you passed.

That's not so in NJ actually- NJ does nto include any sort of "safety" inspectino. I can roll up wihtshattered headlights, no taillights installed, 4 flat tires, and as long as the monitors (all excecpt 1) say ready on the OBD check, and the SES/ check engine lights are not on, that is technically the only requirement on NJ's inspection. They all have cameras to look at the cats but in reality, are not technically required to look for them.
By definition, OBD emissions check is the requiremnt for NJ emissions that are perfrmed at a DMV location.

Jesus, I should move to Jersey. We jump through hoops in NY. My buddy with an M3 in Clifton and told me he had to remove the tint.

Yes exactly. I agree with what you said. The other point I want to make is that you should always pick a private location, like a private, busy auto shop. They are too busy repairing cars, etc and they don't have the time to do a very thorough inspection. They want your $75 and they want you in and out in few minutes so they can get on with their regular work.

Do not go to DMV or any other government run place where all they do is inspections. Avoid those places.
