Value Cover Maintenance

My value cover is starting to leak and was seeing if there is any other maintenance to do? (With the value cover off)

Look up the eccentric shaft sensor, there’s some advice on when to replace it.

+1, and I will add replace the VANOS bolts while you are in there. There is an updated version of the bolts.

In response to the Vanos adjusting units, and the 4 bolts replacement/updated parts. There was a recall for this since 2014 (in Canada at least). If no one has done it yet on your car, then you can make an appointment at the dealer to get the recall work done. They will replace your valve cover gasket for free, since they have to remove the valve cover to do the recall work on the vanos adjusters.

I don't believe that "recall" is still available. I attempted to get this completed at a dealership, as well as called BMW NA, and it has expired/past deadline when I tried last year.

Shoot. I did not realize that it had a time limit, my bad. I really thought recalls never expire, it"s what my tech friend told me so either he is wrong or you are not from Canada. I did spend a couple minutes looking it up though. One American person said it wasn't a recall for them. Instead it was a 10 year, unlimited mileage warranty for everyone in their state i think. I wonder how they decide who gets the VANOS adjusters replaced. Because I remember seeing the description being that 'IF NECESSARY'? they will replace parts. So what makes it necessary? Is it the broken bolts, or a certain number of bolts have to be broken? Or the car has to have a code stored for crankshaft correlation? I'd like to know.

I hope the recall/warranty is still available in some places though. Maybe if other regions ask for it they may get it? It's worth a shot to send an email or a call. If anyone does contact them let us know if you do please. What region are you from?

I don't know why sometimes USA gets a recall and canada gets nothing or only a warranty and vice-versa. It's so unfair because our cars and roads and everything is basically the same. In Canada we did not get ANYTHING for the faulty FRM modules that love to brick themselves while coding or even just reading codes.Im salty because I have fried mine 3x now in 2 years (now I only use ncsexpert and read diagnostics in ISTA or INPA with my car running and windows closed, incase it blows again). The USA got a 10 year extended warranty or something. We got nothing even though they are faulty. They corrupt some or all of the contents of the read-only-memory chip that keeps the firmware "safe" by putting it on a memory chip that when working properly its contents should theoretically only be able to be modified when applying a very specific voltage by a specific programmer in a specific way using a specific procedure…. You get it. So its super hard to lose it or get it corrupted. Nope it gets corrupted then to fix it WE need to somehow restore it with a specific programmer on a specific voltage… etc… rip.not an easy feat if you also work full time and have a family or a busy life which I thankfully? don't, for now at least. And then the alternative is a $600 module because BMW won't repair it, they only sell new ones. I heard they halved the price of the modules as a good will gesture as well…. I think YMMV.
