6mt N54 White Smoke

Evening gents.. I know this topic is beat to death but currently having a decent amount of white smoke. I hope this post will help clear some things up for others as I’ve searched and am still scratching my head a bit so here we go, cheers.

For some context, I bought the car with a spun bearing and just finished swapping in a new N54. 106k on chassis and 95k on motor. New front & rear main seals. AW 07 6mt e92.

The car came with full bolt ons and is currently running on stage 2+ e40 on MHD. It was having some insane misfires after the swap but I had no way to read the codes.. previous owner had “lost” the MHD receiver so I was essentially flying blind. Just received my WiFi adaptor and can now see what the car is saying.

I initially installed new oem Bosch plugs that seemed to fix much of the misfire issue. I also purchased Delphi coils to help with the now occasional misfire (have not installed as car has been parked for about 2 weeks).

After plugs were changed, I drove the car about 100 miles before I started to notice white smoke on deceleration. It started off as no big deal but one day on my way home from work, it didn't stop when I took off from the light..lol

Plumes of billowing white smoke followed me all the way home. The car was running a bit rough but seemed to be boosting just fine. Ironically, she did not misfire that day. Now when I start the car, it begins smoking after a few seconds.

I opened up the oil cap, and it smells of fuel. My guess is that its injectors but they’re new index 12s with less than 200 miles. The last owner had just installed them before his bearing spun to mars.

Right now the only codes I’m getting are:
  • 2C9D - DME: Oxygen sensor heater 2 before catalytic converter: Activation.
  • 2FDB - Crankshaft sensor, signal: Not plausible. (shadow code)

I have narrowed the issue down to the following:
1. Vanos Solenoids
2. Improperly installed and leaky injectors (didnt realize the shop I took the car to for the swap was staffed by backyardigans) - oil smells of fuel.

My questions are:
Has anyone else had this issue? How did you remedy it?
Would I be able to reinstall my injectors with new o-ring and decoupler?
Can an O2 sensor cause this issue?

Will be taking my car to a more serious shop Monday to give me a run down and I will certainly keep everyone posted. The car fires up with no hesitation and seems to start stumbling after a minute or so since I reset its adaptations. Scared to run the car too much with possible oil dilution from leaky injectors.

PS: the car has an OCC and I plan on getting a new VC while the cars in the shop. Thinking of getting the external PCV kit from RB as well.

Smelling into the oil cap will always have some sort of fuel smell to it. you can post a log to see what the 02 sensors are reading. Yes u can reinstall the injectors if they were put on wrong. We're the injectors coded? What does the smoke smell like. Are u sure these are authentic index 12? Kinda sounds like they were leaking on the old motor and that's what wiped out the rod bearings. A stuck open injector will smoke more than a smoke machine. Thick white smoke but that would cause misfires and rough running. Could also be pcv related. Rb pcv is a solid upgrade either way helps eliminate that as the issue

The smoke smells awful. Can’t really describe it but it does not smell like the sweet coolant smell that would emit whenever my p38 Range Rover blew a head gasket. I just saw a video by VehicularDIY where he was experiencing the exact same issues and it turned out to be an Oxygen Sensor. Car starts of smooth, starts having a rough idle after 30 seconds, smoke from the exhaust and a super rich running condition.

I think you’re correct though.. the idle was very smooth and misfires were infrequent after the plugs were changed. I’m a bit relieved to hear about the oil smell not being too far out of the ordinary.

A new valve cover, RB PCV, and pre cat O2 sensor seems like the most reasonable place to start. I’m fairly certain they’re authentic index 12s as I got a good look at them when I was changing the plugs. I’ll have to get the injector removal kit and new gaskets for them

Video update

Hey guys, quick update with video.

Select the cold start noise reduction and that improved the cars choppy idle slightly. As you can see here, the car fires right up which leads me to believe this is an o2 sensor issue and not leaky injectors. Have decided to swap the plug myself and not take it to a shop after reading that one charged a member $400 just to code injectors.

Already have the Bosch sensor & my new coils. Waiting for new valve cover, belt assembly and PCV kit.. will DIY once my parts come in.
