Thanks for the link! Of course, I couldn’t agree more with their assessment!

Interesting. They picked the E46 M3 CS over the E46 M3 CSL.

The success of the M2 CS and M5 CS appears to be rewriting history and recalibrating people's opinion of the CS badge. Also perhaps reflecting a trend in motoring journos to prefer some everyday drivability along with track focused design.

Not sure I agree with the last two. No one is going to care about either in a decade. S54 Z3 M Roadster/Coupe & 850csi are better choices. This is pretty typical though, it's an advertising job for BMW.

Always difficult to make a call on recent cars. I do think a G8x M3/4 of some kind will make these lists in the long run. It may well be a CS or CSL variant however.

I think the G8x will be a classic sometime, maybe even more than the F8x (m3/4, the m2s will be popular).

But yeah it was weird to leave out the Clownshoe. I feel like the E61 does not belong in that list (even if the touring is very cool).

850 CSI is one of my favorite cars but not officially an M car. There is only 1 "real" M8 since they never actually went into production with that but to me the 850CSI is as cool as most M cars.

I probably pick the CSL over the CS for the E46. Yes the SMG might not be a manual but its a cool transmission and that car was very loved. It is also common to do a manual swap on the SMG cars even though for the CSL I would leave it as SMG as a cool collectors car.

I never drove an SMG but drove the equivalents in a Ferrari 360 and early Gallardo recently. They are both terrible in comparison to the 2 DCT BMWs I've owned.

However, SMG was probably more engaging and just as good as auto transmissions were are the time. My wife's 2005 330i auto tranny was quite slow to shift. I think SMG would keep me away from the CSL unless it was just a showpiece collector.

I think the list is pretty good. The G80 is growing on me daily and it's an amazing performer. It's so hard to create these lists, you'll always leave off something special.

Says right in the article, 3 pedal for the CS, vs the SMG of the CSL. Which I can COMPLETELY understand.

Anyone else notice that the remarks on the 1M and the M2CS were almost part A and part B of the same remarks? If not, read it again.

I also missed the clownshoe and the Z4M . . . Either of those could displace the G-series which need not be mentioned in this kind of conversation.

"Those same bods that made the 1M as special as it was had time to hone the [M2] CS.

The result is what might just be one of the last great traditional BMW sports coupes, an unsurprising multiple award-winner, as autonomy and electrification creep ever closer."

The M3 CS in the UK was just the M3 Competition to us in the states, which was widely available. But EVO never liked the CSL during the year it came out and loved the CS the year after.

I think the CSL's image was boosted by its rarity and its engine note. Recent manual conversions with a different final drive (by EverythingM3) has finally helped it unlock its potential.

As soon as I saw G80 xDrive in the list of best M-series BMWs of all time I knew the list was immediately void. That vehicle is a testament for how far bmw has fallen from striving to produce the best and most driver centric M3. The M3 has always been BMWs flagship sporty coupe, and now it cannot be purchased with two doors. It doesn't compete with the M5. It is everything I hate all in one car. Call me a cranky negative Nancy but ever time I see one I wonder if I will ever again appreciate a modern M3.

Dear Mr. Cranky Negative Nancy,

I think you should try driving a G8X at a M track day and report back.

Sincerely,
Former hater to soon-to-be owner of G8X

Glad to see the M2 CS get some love. The M2 Comp perhaps guilty of greatness by association with the CS as well.

Out of interest what car are you driving now and have you driven a G80? Genuine question trying to get a sense of your perspective

I've owned a euro E36 M3, E46 CSL, e39 M5 and now the G80 and I think it's a fantastic car. If you want two doors the M4 is essentially a two door M3 and of an M4 is too heavy and not pure enough for you, you have the M2. Different variants for different needs…

I Have driven the S54 Z3M coupe which was excellent but was I left a little underwhelmed any time I drove an E30 M3 TBH. You really need to drive it hard and carry speed through the corners. It takes some learning

I haven't driven an M2 but get the feeling it'd be an amazing drivers car

I have to agree that is is strange to have the G80 included in the list. It is way to early in its life cycle to call it one of the best M cars of all time. To me it is too big and heavy to ever consider buying one.

It's a better performance car than pretty much any other on the list, save for the heavier and more expensive M5 CS. I guess it depends on what's valued by the driver.

It's so subjective anyway. Saying the S65 is low on torque is a basic observation that doesn't really explain the character of the car.
