adaptive headlights question

Laugh all you want, I just noticed it recently.

Are the headlights supposed to go both left and right? Cause when I was at work today, I was amazed at how they worked. But the lights only go to the right. when i turn the sterring wheel to the left, nothing happens and the lights stay straight. Is that right?

Again laugh all you want

OK, so I finished laughing for a good few minutes!
This question is probably second to the "death rattle MT" threads.

If you had searched, you would find that the lights behaviour that you noted is like that at REST. It has to do with not blinding the oncoming traffic when you're stopped and waiting to turn left in an intersection with the wheels aimed to the left. When the car is moving, then the lights will turn with the steering, more so with higher speeds. Also, you'd be surprised but most people don't know that the adaptive headlights only work with the light switch set to Auto!

thanks. Now I feel like a retard. I did email my sa at the dealer and he said park straight and lights will go left when turned. That's why I posted here just to make sure. And my lights are always on auto. So only while driving they go left but parked I can go full right an nothing left.

Don't worry about it... I went thru the same thing with the adaptive lights and MT death rattle when first got the E90. E90post has a lot of helpful members helping each other out, and I'm just glad that I can return a favour.

Oh, and I find that most BMW SA's can learn a thing or two from E90post members.

Only right

I'm very proficient with the adaptive lights. My "drivers side" light has now stopped turning with the car (though the self-test leveling still works fine) after the headlight was replaced (someone backed into the headlight and bumper)

The dealer said the headlight needed "initialization" - which I waited 3 hours at the service center for them to do.

It didn't help. But it might help you.

Mine appears to be an actual defective headlight they put in.

?

Since the topic is being disussed, Has anyone noticed the lights self leveling (vertically)when you are on a steep incline and move some inches at a time and reach a steady level once you are on a level road.? I have noticed it several times then have thought it is just my superstition but I clearly noticed it a couple of days ago again.
Other than that I am familier with the auto leveling at start and not turning left when parked for which a very logical explanation already given above by one of the members.

Yep, back country driving at night would be the best at putting the adaptive lights to good use! The street lights in the city are too powerful for me to notice the lights swivelling during turns.

It has been known that some/most 6MT cars will have that rattle sound when shutting down the engine without pressing the clutch pedal. The noise is likely due to the flywheel coming to a sudden stop with the engine still engaged.

The noise disappears if you step on the clutch pedal when you shut down the engine, as the OP noted. You don't have to be in neutral or any specific gear.

Again, this won't be a problem for you if you drive AT.
