Removing Insert Nut from Driveshaft
I'm in the process of replacing my CSB and giubo, and have managed (with much difficulty) to start removing the insert nut with a 50mm thin wrench. It seems that as the insert nut (green arrow) is loosening, this black metal ring (red arrow) is deforming. Thought I'd better stop and ask advice before I bugger something up. Is the nut supposed to fit inside the ring as you back it off, or how does that work? Seems like the driveshaft should move forward as the nut is loosened, but I think the giubo (which I've read should be removed after the insert nut) will be providing some resistance. Any advice on how to proceed would be much appreciated.
Geez, this nut is stubborn. I'm wondering if heating it up with a heat gun would melt the loctite enough to make it easier? EDIT: I see from the Bentley manual that this black ring is a retaining clip, but there are no instructions on how to remove it. I assume that it must not be a continuous ring if you're able to remove it, but I'm not seeing any break in the metal anywhere. Any hints? Have you searched online? I've seen lots of videos and forums posts talking about removing the driveshaft..... although I don't remember what they said about that ring.

Thanks for the response. None of the videos I've found show the driveshaft with the big nut on the end, which I believe might only be used on the turbo models. Within that, there appear to variations, as the insert nut kit has been revised a couple times. Perhaps I'll have a better understanding when my new parts arrive here later today.

I replaced my differential last summer and that nut was indeed an absolute pain to get off. The factory loctite will fight you the entire way until the nut is completely off. As you turn the nut, the driveshaft will begin pushing back towards the front of the car and the nut will remain on the diff. As for the black ring, It’s a retaining clip for the nut and not an oil seal. The new nut will come with a new one so doesn’t matter if you damage it. It simply pops off with a screwdriver.

Thought I'd pass along to anyone else that needs to do this that this $29 wrench set on E-Bay includes the wrench you need to get insert nut off. It's made of 1/4" plate steel. I questioned whether it would be stout enough, but it was. I used a long handled 1/2" drive ratchet with a short extension. The other wrench in the set is useless for this, but maybe you can use it on your ATV.

BTW, the new insert nut is a whole lot easier to put on than it was to get the old one off. I guess it takes 15 minutes or so for the thread sealant to kick in. |
