Alarm

Hi people,

I recently got myself an 08 plate e90 and im pretty pleased with everything.

One problem i have though is the alarm system. I have the red nose and it flashes when i lock the car but cant seem to get the alarm to sound.

I noticed this when a window was broken accidentally (how annoying is that?) and nothing happened.

In my purchase docs it does state alarm system so i will be pissed if they say i have no alarm.

Some people talk about activation of the alarm? Should i have to pay for this if it says my car is fitted with an alarm?

sorry for waffling.

cheers for any help.

Did you buy the car used? If so, perhaps the previous owner had the alarm unit installed but never got around to activating the alarm at the dealer. This seems to be the case because the clown nose will continue to blink when you lock the car but none of the other functions such as locking confirmation chirp or alarm siren will sound if the alarm is not activated.

If you bought this car new and the dealer stated the alarm had been installed by the factory then I would take the car back to the dealer and have them activate the alarm software to make sure the alarm is fully functional.

I think this advice is relevant to the US rather than the UK.

In the UK the alarm will be working from the outset. There is no confirmation noise, just a flash of the indicator lights.

I know mine works, because my kids have set it off a couple of times when I've left them in the car on the petrol station forecourt to pay for fuel in the kiosk.

If you press the lock button twice in quick succession the internal lights come on and then fade out again. This leaves the car locked, but disables the movement sensor. I think this may have happened in your case.

Thanks for the reply,

Can you explain this for me? When i lock my car i press the lock button twice, the indicators flash and the red nose starts flashing.

Do i need to press it only once?

Thanks

Yes, only once is needed. If you're pressing twice as NFS said you're disabling the motion sensor.

You can't set the confirmation chirp from within iDrive? Boy, you guys got rooked.

When I installed my alarm and then had it activated the dealership did tell me there wasn't an audible confirmation available when I asked him if it chirped. But when I got out to the car I was able to set the iDrive for audible confirmation. The corners flash whether you have the alarm or not and this is selectable.

You probably weren't standing with your head shoved up into the wheelwell in order to hear the alarm. It's a rather quiet alarm; more of an annoyance than attention grabber.

Yep - on my car you can enable / disable the flashing lights, but there's no chirp.

Tis a bit annoying because the light flash isn't instant, so if you aren't concentrating or are looking away you can miss it.

I often find myself walking back to the car to check I locked it.
