Need advice on oil please
I'm looking at fcpeuro oil change kits and I'm not sure if I should be using 5w40 or 5w30 for my 328i xDrive. Also not really sure what the difference is.
I live in the northeast and the temperature is often below freezing in the winter, does that impact either one? This is my first oil change myself, any feedback is appreciated |

Either will be fine. Personal preference but BMW also recommends Castrol oil and that’s what I always use. Castrols 5w-30 European formula A3/B4. I get the 5 quart jugs at Walmart and they’re $25 or so. You’ll need 7 quarts. Make sure to also buy a Mann oil filter which FCP sells and it comes with the two rubber seals, replace both of those before putting the filter back in. Sometimes you can get the oil filter housing loose by hand otherwise you may need to get a 1/2 drive oil filter housing attachment which FCP sells but also can pick up at most auto parts stores. They’re like 5-10 bucks.

Yes, either... I go w/ 5w30 as that's what the previous owners used.
As this is the first oil change for you with this car, can't hurt to send a sample to Blackstone who can run an analysis. Order a test kit before you do the change. FWIW, I go with longer change intervals (~10k miles) but change the filter around the half-way point. The rest of my car always falls apart long before the engine does! |

You've now asked the same question about oil in three different subforums. Engine oil has literally been the most discussed topic on E90 Post since 2005. There is zero possibility that any question about engine oil has not yet already been answered.
The owners manual specifies what class and weight of oil to use. Just follow what BMW recommends. If you want zero doubt, just order an oil change kit from getBMWparts.com. They offer a reasonable price for genuine BMW oil and filter. This is what I have done with my E90 for the past 15 years. My engine has 416,000 miles on it. Like numerous others have told you, either oil you choose will be absolutely fine. Relax, it's just oil. The oil filter choice is actually more important. Use the OEM HU-816 filter from MANN. |
