looking for some good advice on alignment
I just got on a set of H&R sport springs and VMR V710's and I'm experiencing very severe vibrations at 70-90 mph. I believe this might be due to an alignment issue from my folks curbing one of my wheels and throwing off the alignment beforehand. The misalignment is probably being compounded by the drop. Now FYI, the springs are for an E92 and has been used for about 2000 miles prior to my purchase.
My question is: Do I take my car in for an alignment now and forego any settling time for the springs (considering it has been used) or is it safe for me to wait a week or two before I go in for an alignment? A prompt answer would be appreciated! |

Did you put the wheels/tires along with the springs at the same time? Curbing one of the wheels might do it, but there are a lot of factors that you'll have to narrow down.. including balance of wheels/tires, alignment, or perhaps that with lowering springs you're feeling more of the road. Keep us posted.

thanks. yeah stupid me I should have done a search. it's most likely the wheel being unbalanced in the rear. I got an alignment and it didn't solve the problem. Funny how unbalanced wheels pronounce themselves at 75+ mph. I'll get one done soon and see how it goes..
anyone know how long a wheel balancing takes? |

Vibrations at a specific speed are usually a balance issue, if you feel it in the steering wheel it is probably a front wheel and if you feel it in the seat it is probably a back wheel. I would get the balance checked before doing anything else, since you said they curbed a wheel it probably either balance or a bent wheel. Vibrations usually are not alignment related, a pull or uneven tire wear would be.
Edit: Just saw your reply, to balance 4 wheels right should be an hour at the most depending where you go.

make an appointment at your local tire shop so you don't have to wait as long. balancing really only takes a few minutes for each wheel, plus R&R. usually the wait time to get serviced takes longer than the actual work.
Also, you may want to remove your rear wheels one more time and check the mounting surfaces for burs or debris that may have gotten in between the hub and the back of the wheel, and maybe use a wire brush to clean the surfaces really good before remounting them. I've had a similar problem with vibration that was caused by a small metal shaving that got stuck to the hub and had the wheel mounted over it. |
