What are the best coil packs for n52?

Had a track night last night and at the end of the night during my last 20 mins session I had a misfire. Happened at the end of the longest straight WOT in 4th gear revs slowly climbing from 7000-7500rpms and as I was about to shift I had a misfire and lost a cylinder. I exited to the paddock misfiring the whole way off the track my car sounded like an old Subaru Bug Eye lol

I shut down and restarted and engine was fine immediately. I went right back on the track did 2 or 3 very hard laps same scenario coming down the back straight WOT 4th gear around 7200 rpms or so and bam another misfire, down a cylinder again. I have exited to paddock again and restarted car and it was fine and been fine since.

If anyone cares here’s a video leading to the first misfire:

And here’s me entering the track again after a restart and video ends with same issue on the same straight pretty much same exact place on the track:

I’m told this is classic coil pack failing symptoms and I have 50k hard miles on these coils, so thinking I’ll just start with that. So what are the best “hard use” coils for N52?

The latest ignition coils for the N-series motors are made by Eldor. Those guys are supposedly producing it in the USA, so that's something you may call and ask FCPeuro for. They can absolutely hook you up.

I also come across this on Dinan, it's all a similar variant; kinda hard to go wrong. https://www.dinancars.com/products/e...BoC-mYQAvD_BwE

Lastly, this video below is a good ignition coilpacks primer. Check it out and hope it'll guide you through.

EDIT*: Just checked out your build. Looks like you've dived deep into the track mods. You probably already know what's best. If you're looking for the ultimate ignition coils (modified), then look up "Vehicular DIY" on youtube and he's got one video where he showed how to use some Audi coil packs onto our motors with some electronic wafer boards and some soldering. If you're that mod-inclined, I'd reckon this you can also do. Other than that, it's my opinion that Dinan's coilpacks should be the slight level up you're looking for. I'm building my X5 right now, and that's what I'll use.

+1 on FCP. They have a kit of six plugs and six coils for <$250. Warranty is for life.

I just read about the Dinan ones yupetc linked.

I’m going to give them a try. Dinan says they are 10% stronger than oem, which I’ve been running the oem’s and would prefer an upgrade. I lost a few track sessions on failed oems already.

Plus the Dinan ones are only $167 for 6 (shipped free).

Please share info about the Dinans when you get them (country of origin, possible manufacturer, etc). Really curious what they do to improve them without the Dinan mark up

Will do! I’ll shoot some pics and some comparisons with my old coils also. Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to tell if they fixed my issue until after some track abuse I’ve never had any issues on the street (yet).

Glad you're trying out Dinan's coilpacks. I doubt many would know about these at the moment. And I also doubt Dinan's can really raise the performance on our N52 motors since these are NA. But in terms of lasting a bit longer and being consistent for track use, that 10% may just be what you need to stay on the track. But after install if you "butt-feel" a performance difference, I'd definitely wanna know, too. My e90 N52's got all the power mods, it may benefit from this Dinan coilpack. Happy motoring.

They're made by MSD per Suprgnat

This also interests me.
I wrote there earlier about the same thing.

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...4&postcount=20

I am in Europe.
So the after market Eldor and Dinan coils are almost the same price as the OE BMW Eldor coils. Because I have to pay taxes and shipping.

The problem I have (in Europe) is that Eldor and Delphi are the same OEM part number, so you cannot specify which supplier you want from the dealer. When I bought a set recently (for my N53) they came through as Delphi and the dealer said they had no control over the manufacturer, nor could they specify Eldor.

I think the N53 coil is Delphi.

Great thread, I'm in need since my #6 just dropped too.

Kept it simple and just bought 6 Eldors on FCP to replace my Bosch with only like 50k on them

Eldor are the best PnP option. I used them on my 335i and then my nitrous and sc setup on the n52.

The Delphi 12138616153 does show as compatible w/ the 3-series N52. No superseding part is listed.

The Eldor 12138657273 is not showing as fitting the 3-series N52.

The Eldor 12135A06753 (listed as superseding the above) is not even showing a compatibility list.

all this per realoem... anyone used this Eldor 12135A06753 on 3-series N52?

Yup as said above I used them on my N52. They aren't listed as compatible on realoem because they didn't come oem on N52, they are revised N54 coilpacks. The only N52 they won't fit on are few with the different style coil pack connectors. Just like the N54 owners that use S55 coils etc that didn't come on the N54.

I am using part # 12138657273

What p/n did you have originally on the car, 12138616153/Delphi ? I want to assess if the plugs match (this Delphi works on mine as a replacement for the original Bosch)

Hmm good question, I have had eldor for years now so not sure what originally came on the car when I first purchased it. I've had them on my 2006 325xi and 2006 330i. I believe early 05 mfg date N52 are the ones with the different harness connectors but I can't remember.

Update:

The Dinan coil packs arrived yesterday. They drop shipped from Holley (not Dinan) same day as ordered and the free shipping they arrived in 48 hours… so excellent service and well packaged.

Installed them without issues. The appeared pretty much identical to the Delphi ones I removed although the “click” as you lowered the cover over the wire plug was more secure feeling. Car started up fine and there is really nothing special to report. Here’s a few comparison pics to my removed Delphi, the only differences I noted were the rubber end seemed thinner but maybe mine have swollen some over the 50k miles. There’s a few slight mold markings that are different and the Dinan lacked a ramping where the wire plug inserted.

Unfortunately I don’t think this will fix my issue. I finally pulled codes yesterday and got 0029DC which seems fuel pressure related. I think I have the common crack in the fuel pressure regulator under the back seat because I also smelled fuel strongly in the car while driving yesterday. So need to lift the carpet under where the rear seat goes and investigate that this week.

Interesting comparison Al. Does make you wonder if the Dinan claims are snake oil...
