E91 rear light failure - Melted bracket

Had a light failure on the tailgate brake light on my 07 E91 (pre-lci). Went to check the bulb part number to order a spare, but found the damage (check pictures) to the main bracket.
I checked the bulb (filament was intact), but the bottom of the bulb (and the connector) both showed some signs of rust. Maybe this rust would cause the light failure indicator to go off, but I'm worried about the damage shown in the photos.
Could the poor connection cause the light to pull much more power (or stay 'on' as I have lights set to auto), and generate way more heat than it should?
Picking up replacement bulbs for both sides, so hopefully that'll fix it, but just interested in peoples advice.
