My car is at 1800km and the brakes do feel a bit soft, even compared to my X5. Not sure if it'll change much in 200km

You can’t really argue the results, the M240i does what it should as an M performance car. A fast, fun daily and the Cayman does what it should as a 2 seater mid engine sports car.

I’m still confused as what’s going on with the brakes. Our M240i bites harder than my F80 ever did for mild performance driving. I’ve still not put it through the ringer to really see the fade resistance and consistent bite under really hard and repeated braking from well into triple digit speeds.

This is like the 3rd video I've seen with mention to soft brakes

I'm not sure and I don't have the experience to notice really.

I've gone with a 230 with M sport brakes and I've tested it with the standard AG brakes and they seemed fine to me.

I wonder if the upgraded discs in the m technology pack will make a difference

I kinda like how the brakes feel (easy to modulate and not twitchy when trying to come to a smooth stop), and have not noticed any actual performance issue with them..

The car brakes quickly.. about a minute into this video is a brake test: (32M / 106FT 60-0)

A fluid and pad change made a significant difference for the pedal feel in mine. Probably more so the fluid change/brake bleed.

Odd comparison. The CLA 45 is a sedan that costs $10K more (competing with the M340i). The Porsche is a 2 seat RWD sports car that costs $15K more with a comparative package (competing with the Supra & new Z).

The M240i is the sweet-spot--decently practical and decently sporty. A AWD coupe with a backseat, some luxury, and modest price tag for the whole package. There's literally nothing to compare it to based on those criteria.

RE the brakes. Is it just the standard brakes that everyone is complaining about? I haven't heard issues with the sport one included on the $2K wheel & cooling package yet.

The Cayman is a perfectly fine "daily driver" unless one is fat or super tall. Only detractor is the price, which is even higher than the M2.

So if budget is important, M240 is fine. Otherwise it's Cayman and not even close.

CLA, let's not even go there.

CLA is a 2er competitor. The fact it's overpriced doesn't make it a 3er's competition.

It's not overpriced necessarily. It's supposed to compete with the M2.

This is a weird comparison, a G87 belongs in it if anything. The Cayman is also very different the other two cars.

Here is my opinion of the brakes of this car that I wrote up in the Technical section for brakes:

There is nothing wrong with the brakes on this car. I drove 2022 M240ix at the BMW performance drivers’ school and they performed great. Did repeated panic brake stops from up to 60 mph and they worked as they are supposed to. The brake pedal is a little more boosted than some, but the pedal pressure was firm, but not too hard. I did not require any acclamation time to get used to them. The instructors were very excited to get this car in the fleet and they love the performance overall.

I have taken my car up to 100 and made a quick deceleration to 40 and the balance was fine, no big front-end dive, pedal modulation was firm. Just did what they are supposed to do with no drama.

I suspect some yahoo reviewer on YouTube decided to put down the brakes on this car with no basis and other reviewers piled on like lemmings. Such a pity, because they work fine. Now with the Carwow test, that dispels the notion that they are not great. They functioned fine and beat the other test cars (MB, Audi).

If brakes are the same as my M340i (and they should be), they take some extra effort but if you put your foot down the power is there, you just have to go a little deeper. They're not grabby like an M car can be.

I love the way the 718 looks but the 4 cylinder engine I found so disappointing when I test drove 4 years ago and put me off. Also, the tech felt pretty dated back then so imagine it feels gen or 2 behind the bm.

Interesting what turned me off to modem bmws is the overt emphasis on tech over dynamics and focus. What you find dated is what makes the 718 appealing to those that love BMW sedans and coupes until they went tech over substance. What you call dated is a very focused cockpit in the Cayman with white on black gauges and real car guy stuff like the option to display real-time boost, oil temp, coolant temp and all those dated things that newer BMW fans don't care about. Whatever you say or don't like about the Cayman or it's engine it IS a real sports car... full stop. The m235 is a fantastic car for those that want 4 seats and a fun driving experience but it is too heavy for what it is mainly because modern bmw owners want so much tech and fluff on their cars. I actually just bought a Cayman to go with my other two BMWs before it gets ruined by people like you saying that the super purposeful gauges, a display below the dash line and real buttons to control things go away to appease the new gen tech fans. The reason people are paying insane money for used cars is because those cars were more focused than new ones ruined by people asking for more numbing tech and infotainment. In the cayman my previous 1M and my ZHPs the drive Is the entertainment.

And what a brilliant street engine it is. It just keeps making me love it more everytime I drive it, which ain’t often since my wife protect it like it’s her precious

It’s not as stout and racy as the the F80’s S55 but my god is it sophisticated and creamy. In this tune together with the ZF8 in sport mode in this smallish coupe, wow. The way it sounds and the way it effortlessly deliver big power reminds my of an exotic GT car. It’s astonishingly good and feel like something triple the price of the M240i. I’m blown away of the value and none of the cars in this test can touch it’s ankles in this regard. Thank you BMW for giving us long term fans this somewhat unexpected gem before the ICE era is over and done with.

I’m obviously who the bm is aimed at. Creamy straight 6, ability to be a great mile mucher, all the modern tech I need in a quality build, fun when i want it to be. I’d pick the 718 (gts) to go on track but for road use it’s a no brainer for me. I’m a 15 years of audi owner so bmw upsetting the traditional bmw buyers with the m240 has drawn in new buyers to the brand. I know a lot of audi drivers moving to the m240. All wheel drive platform with a quality interior and great tech is something audi no longer deliver in the cost cutting post dieselgate era
