BMW: 0 Snow:1

My E90 is the worst car i've ever owned for getting out in the snow(about 6 inchs). The dam thing was like a beeched whale. Needed to dig the bugger out.

That DTC thing is kak, was easier to get out and about with it switched off completely. Fair enough it has 18's but has anyone else had any trouble or am i just being a spoon. I mean the germans etc hoon round in the snow all day

You are supposed to switch DTC off (put the light on) to move in the snow and switch DSC off entirely if it is really difficult to move in the snow.

There is a paragraph in the manual about it as with the full traction control working, you can't move in snow at all.

A couple more old videos to show just how much the cars are tested in 'proper' winter conditions:

Right principle, but pressing the button once switches on DTC

I thought it switched it off.

Press five times for snow mode, four times for ice and three times for slush.

If you really need to know how to switch DSC off & DTC on, have a look here, courtesy of NFS himself.

Man that first video makes me want to have a go... Can't believe they are using normal summer/road tyres... must be winter tyres.

Where I live double bend uphill in winter to get to main drag, might as well give up. Traction control fully off still same no grip at all with 18" wheels, and thats with 1" of snow, wifes Honda no problem at all and fun to drive in winter conditions. Still love the BM though and would not swap

The BMW is no worse than any other rear wheel drive car I've owned. I had a Lexus and a Mercedes and they were both as bad.

Thats what i'm talking about. A wee corsa flew up the hill past me while i was sat spinning. Having said that, it was far easier to get going and drive about with the DTC completely off. Ya can let rip too once you get going

Why don't you try reversing up the hill - instant front wheel drive...........

I'll get my coat....

In the end, front wheel drive is ALWAYS better than rear wheel drive in the snow.

BMW is better than many because the weight distribution is even, meaning that there is some weight on the rear axle.

My first car (ford cortina) was RWD with all the weight at the front and it was apalling in snow. It couldn't get up any sort of incline. Most drivers recommended sticking a couple of paving slabs in the boot, or failing that reversing up hills.

The problem with the modern BMW's is that the DSC system cuts engine power when the wheels spin. In the snow that means you get nowhere.

Activating DTC by pressing the button once allows you some spin - which helps.

Switching off DSC by pressing and holding the button for 5 secs allows you as much spin as you want, so you can push through the snow in a more traditional way. I was always taught to drive in a higher gear in the snow, so that the wheelspin can be better managed. Once you understand what these systems are doing it makes more sense. When DSC is active the reduction in engine power when the warning light is flashing is very evident.
