JB3 1.2 Review (Minus the tuning Wars)

Let me start by saying that prior to buying a JB3 I had no loyalty to either JB or procede and in fact had never owned a turbo car so I was new to all of this. I could have very easily gone for V3 as I had the money for it and was actually leaning towards it when it had come out. However, after a lot of research on here I decided to go with the JB3 for three very simple reasons.
1)Price, which at that time was $779 for the JB3 and $1495 for the
V3
2)Physically not detectable due to no need of tapping for ground
and power
3)Based on this forum it seemed like they were both getting similar
results so I thought it made economically more sense (more bang
for your buck) and making #2 a huge pro since my car is a lease.

Now both tunes are very good and strong and people can argue forever about the differences but at this point its like comparing a mac to a PC. They both have their pros and cons but they are both at the top of the game and both are generally good and do what they say and frankly I could care less about squabbleing over how they look internally and who's chip is bigger and better and all the other nonsense pissing contest that goes on. So that being said lets leave the wars out of this.

Now on to the part that I'm sure everybody would rather hear:
I have an 2008 e92 6AT (build date 12/07) with V80 and 29.2. My car is completely stock other than the JB3. I have been through 1.0v, 1.1v and after buying my JB3 from Terry and exchanging e-mails and what not we became acquainted and he decided that I could be a beta tester. He invited me over to his house last sunday and we installed a 1.2 chip and a boost guage and took the car out for testing. We started off with map 3 which is similar to the 1.1 chip and worked our way up to map 6.
1)Map 3 felt just like 1.1 so no need for info
2)Map 4 is the same as three but with lag fix 2.0 and the car felt a
little smoother and more responsive but not a big enough change
to get excited about
3)Map 5 was definitely an improvement and the car felt stronger and
had lots of power but something was missing
4)Map 6 was what was missing. It is just like map five but with lag fix
2.0. The car now felt really strong all around as well as smooth, no
jerkiness and partial throttle response was instant.
Terry was watching the boost guage and through each map he commented that the boost was building quicker and that throttle response was getting better and better. He was driving, mostly in DS. I asked him to drive it in D because I feel like most of the lag is in D and my theory is that this whole lag thing is partly actual lag as well as partial throttle response. So after 20 minutes of driving we head back and I start to drive home but only in D as I wanted to test it at first in D to see if it was any better due to my experience and theory about the lag. So for the past week I have kept it in D mostly except for a couple of times.

Now my opinion is that 1.2 map 6 is the way to go. Map 6 feels like it combines the best of 1.0 and 1.1 with added improvement in throttle response. The car feels very strong and I don't think twice about passing someone anymore. Just tap on the gas pedal and away you go. For example, on the way home from work I merge from one freeway to another and have to slow down to get on the ramp as it is curved but the oncoming traffic is still at freeway speeds and normally I would have to slam it to get passed them and lane change but now with 1.2 throttle response is greatly improved and all I do is tap it about a 1/4 of the way down (sometimes less) and the car pulls smoothly and I am able to obtain the speed I need to get ahead of the oncoming traffic. Same goes for stop lights. No longer do I have cars half as fast or with a 1/3 of the power beating me off the line. Now the car pulls right away and all I see are cars in my rear view mirror. It feels like it did when I first got the car except with alot more power. The car is very driveable in D and feels refined and you dont feel like you have to feather the gas pedal to make the ride smooth for passengers. Until you slam it and the car starts pulling and you hit 80 in no time. So in general map 6 in D is very good for all around daily driving that gives you comfort but enough power to maneuver through traffic as well as beat most other cars out there. In DS map 6 makes the car a whole other animal. The car just screams and will pull the car to redline in first and second very quickly and will hit triple digits and will not stop till you decide, without faltering for a second. I actually had a ferarri 430 on the freeway in front of me and we both needed to lane change and get in front of another car so I heard him floor it cause theres no mistaking that sound and I was in DS and did the same and was able to keep up. He then slowed down to exit and as I passed him he gave me a look like what the hell was that and how were you able to keep up. Also the gas pedal map change was alot easier than I thought it was going to be and works great especially since it is free. So in general I highly recommend JB3 1.2 and am very satisfied. However, there is always room for improvement and if theres a way I'm sure Terry will find it.

To sum up: JB3 1.0=good, JB3 1.1=better, JB3 1.2=great

Nice write up.

Can you run race fuel with 1.2?

Oh and I forgot to mention mention that I am now getting between 19.9 and 20.1 mpg while stock the most I ever got was 17. I think its due to the improved throttle response thus not needing to slam the gas pedal in turn using less gas during normal everyday driving.

I assume you are running 91 octane? Isn't that below the recommended amount for the hotter 1.1 map? If so, any problems?

Can I run map 6 on 91 octane without damaging anything? Sucks that we only have 91 here in Cali.

I run it for two days now with no problems so far. However, I find map 4 more efficient and easier to operate the car in stop-and-go traffic.

Interesting.... So the hotter map can actually support 91 octane. I guess Terry was just being conservative when he said that it need to be 93 octane +. Alot of users seem to have no issues runnign the hotter map with the 91 octane or 93 octane with no supporting mods.

Good review. Dual cone intake would be useful especially if you plan to use the race gas map at any time.

Nope, since you have 29.2 and you mentioned that you care about diagnostic invisibility, you must be running the version that increases fuel pressure without telling the ECU about it, so the ECU thinks you are using less fuel than you really are and hence displays exaggerated fuel economy figures. This has been talked about before. The only way you can find out your real fuel economy is the old fashioned way. Glad you're enjoying the tune!

If you have intake/downpipes. you can run 91 but it is recommended that you use a higher octane. It all depends on how your car likes the map. Some of the beta testers have been getting away with it.
