Massive difference in exhaust sound with diameter

i recently installed 2.5 inch cts downpipes (pure chineseium) with a bomiz valved exhaust on my n54 and the drone and rasp was horrible. i switched over to vrsf 3 or 3.5 inch diameter downpipes and it completely fixed it, nice low pitch with almost no rasp. i know that the downpipe design has a lot to do with how an exhaust sounds but i never know that just the diameter could make such a big difference.

also has anyone else had DP's with bad fitment from cts? i know a couple so far.
