Carjacking in Sydney

A Lexus convertible was carjacked last night after thieves crashed into the car and then stole it. The thieves used a Subaru WRX, which was probably stolen, and pointed a handgun at the owner.

I hope they catch the buggers so it doesn't happen to anyone else (including members of this forum).

From the Sydney Morning Herald:
Police are hunting thieves who used their own car to bump into a Lexus convertible last night, before carjacking its driver when he stopped to investigate the crash.

The 24-year-old male driver was driving his black Lexus convertible south on Campbell Hill Road, Chester Hill, in Sydney's south west, about 9.45pm yesterday.

He was bumped from behind by a blue Subaru WRX as he stopped at a roundabout at the Wolumba Street intersection, a police spokeswoman said.

The Lexus driver turned into Wolumba Street and got out of his car to exchange details with the other driver, but a passenger in the Subaru had opened his door and pointed a handgun at him, she said.

Did you not see the spate of Bimmers, Mercs & Porkies that were flogged in Sydney last year?
It was a complete travesty, seeing M3's burnt out, SL65's trashed, 911 turbo's reduced to ashes.... Enough to make a grown man cry..

Seem's odd that they'd target a sluggish Lexus convertible, given most of these vehicles were used as getaway cars, hence the taste for high end performance cars.

Now that you mentioned it, I do recall the last spate of carjackings but it seems more like 3-4 years ago now. I think it was predominantly around the eastern suburbs.

I hope this latest carjack does not turn into an epidemic like the last one (or the current epidemic of ramming or blowing up Sydney ATMs)!

Since they have targeted Lexus, they may also be targeting Beemers, Mercs, Audis, etc. Remember a handgun was produced, so these guys are no joyriders.

Yeah the RS4 was damaged at Clovelly. Apparently, they stole another car and got away.

On a not so serious note, anyone remember the Clarkson quote on Top Gear the other week?
"Only C*cks drive Audis!"
Looks like it isn't far from the truth!

Shit, this makes me worry........

I have just recently bought a new metal baseball bat, mitt and ball from rebel and keep them behind my seat. If i were to be car jacked by guys with knives they will be in for a surprise (if they have guns i will just hand over the keys )

The guys who got the Ozaudi member were in a secured carpark of his apartment block in rosebay, which is a decent suburb. I am starting worry about being targeted as well.

oh btw lol at mpowers post

Many years ago I was tired of having my car broken into in the car park of a unit we were renting. One night I heard the arseholes so confronted them with a cricket bat. 2 managed to get away, the 3rd needed to be taken to hospital with a very broken knee.

Honestly if I was confronted with a car jacking I'd just let them have the car. But I would certainly leave the fob in my pocket........

Nope, still using the Stage 0, Non-doomsday 11-14-08 Beta Map. Holding off for the final version coming in any day now.

Have you installed your catted DP's yet ?

I still haven't touched mine due to a dealership visit to replace all my tail lights.

To the OP, sorry for the off topic subject.

Carjacking Epidemic in Sydney

The title of this thread would have more aptly been described as Carjacking EPIDEMIC in Sydney.

BMW//MPOWER was right, this is much worse than I first thought. It appears the spate of Sydney carjackings in recent years hasn't really subsided. It is just not being reported as widely in the mass media except where there is a new twist added (ie. blowing up ATMs) or when firearms are involved.

I did some quick research on the NSW Police Force Media Release Archives>> which only go as far back as 1 November 2008.

Some recent carjackings (in reverse date order):

11 Dec: Audi RS4 (Clovelly) - 3 men wearing hooded jumpers.
http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/me...ZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D

10 Dec: Lexus convertible (Chester Hill) - 2 offenders one with a handgun, in a blue Subaru WRX. This is the subject of my original post.
http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/me...ZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D

05 Dec: dark blue Subaru WRX STI (Vaucluse) - man in balaclava yielding a knife.
http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/me...ZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D

28 Nov: Holden Commodore (Casula) - man wearing a baseball cap.
http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/me...ZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D

26 Nov: Toyota Corolla (Clovelly) - 4 males wearing heavy clothing and disguises. This is the carjacking after the botched ATM explosion.
http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/me...ZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D

20 Nov: high-performance Mercedes coupe (Cremorne) - 3 offenders wearing balaclavas.
http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/me...ZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D

Also, a quick read of the OzAudi links provided by Sparky66, produced the following incidents:

26 Nov: silver Audi sedan (A6?) torched in Redfern.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...491587041.html

25 Nov: Masked men blow up 3 ATMs across Sydney (Clovelly, Chester Hill & Guildford). At Chester Hill, 3 men escape in a late-model silver Audi.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...491492991.html

26 Oct: 2001 Audi S4 (Rose Bay) - 2 bandits wearing balaclavas.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...285561301.html

17 Sep: Lexus convertible carjacked (North Parramatta) - 3 men, 1 reached through her window and grabbed the keys. Car was later used in botched armed robbery at Regents Park. 4 men were arrested.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...330841960.html

16 Sep: Armed robbery (Narrabeen) - 3 men escape in silver Audi A8 and manage to evade capture 3 times.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...330973107.html

15 Sep: Audi RS4 carjacked - 2 men in basement car park force owner to hand over car. This is the car that was damaged in Clovelly.
see OzAudi link in Post #7

A google search on sydney carjacking yields 27,300 hits (web) or 3,570 hits (from Australia). This stuff is scary. Anyway, that's about it from me.

Logically the reason they'd go for RS4's make's a lot of sense.... it's rather understated, rip off the RS4 badge and change the plates to some from an A4 an 99% of the population couldn't tell the diff if you offered them 50k as a reward, which explains why carjackers would target such a car as an ideal getaway vehicle. I just feel sorry for the poor guys who have their cars knicked.

I just wonder whether the cars are written off (under insurance) or whether they are returned... Guess it depends on how badly they were damaged.

I've had 2 cars stolen in the past and both have been recovered. One had to have its differential replaced due to the thieves pulling burnouts... Needless to say I sold the car soon after getting it repaired.

I'd hate to have to sell a luxury performance car in the current 'economic climate'.

And here's another one.....

16 Dec: Mercedes 330C convertible carjacked (Rosemeadow) - man armed with a syringe.
http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/me...ZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D

.....and another ATM explosion at Ruse, in Sydney’s south-west.
