xi and staggered wheels
Hi All,
I wasnt sure whether to post here or in the wheels section...I am a new member. I'm thinking about picking up an 08 335xi coupe. I think that makes it a E92, right? Anyway, the car that I have located only has 17" wheels (stock). I've seen some others with 18" 5 spoke wheels with 225's up front and 255's in the rear. My question is this: If the car came stock with (4) 17's with 225's...can I still put staggered wheels/tires on a xi model, without messing up the AWD? I understand the concept of maintaining the correct OD, as I've put custom wheels on many cars...just not AWD cars. Thank you in advance, for the help! |

Welcome to the forum!
The staggered setup you mentioned is fine BUT ONLY B/C the circumference is the same for the particular stagger combination. If circumference is off by more than .5% or so, you start having issues. Try a : ... This topic has been beaten to death at least a dozen times. |

I think he meant to say 5%, not 0.5%

I agree you will be fine but that car does not have an oil cooler. Just something to think about. For XI's you need the sport package and 18's to get the oil cooler.

Can anyone confirm whether this will work ok on a E92 xi with sport package?
19” VMR Silver V710 Details: Front Size & Offset: 19x8.5 ET35 Rear Size & Offset: 19x9.5 ET33 Front Tire: Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position 235/35/19 Rear Tire: Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position 275/30/19 Bridgestone's site says the OD's are as follows: 275/30R19 OD = 25.6 235/35R19 OD = 25.5 Also, any other tire brand/model recommendations would be appreciated. Looking for all-season/high performance thanks! |

No. If you run staggered wheels on an xi, your car will explode, and you may be eaten by a polar bear. If you don't believe me, "staggered wheels xi"

You'll have a reasonable chance of rubbing in the rear due to the 275/30/19, but we've had customers order this combo in the past

Sounds like you need to search - Staggered IS FINE as long as the circumference is within 1%. BMW sells xi's with staggered wheels. In fact, most sport package options ARE staggered on both the 328xi and 335xi sedans and coupes. bmwusa.com. try it. really.

Those are the correct sizes and are the ones used on factory staggered sets.

You're not so hot at reading sarcasm are you? I would have thought the "eaten by polar bears" part would have given it away.

So, for clarification...
Looking at Goodyear F1 Assymetrics: 235/35/19 has an OD of 25.5" and 820 rev's/mile 265/30/19 has an OD of 25.3" and 826 rev's/mile 2/10's of an inch and 6 rev's/mile difference. Is this close enough not to mess up the AWD? The 275's are actually closer, but then I have potential rubbing issues. Anyone running these? Please tell me these will work ok, I'm so tired of looking for tires, LOL Thanks |

I've asked time and time and time again where 1% comes from, and no one has ever come up with an answer that makes any sense.

There has got to be some room for error, for the simple fact that tires wear, and often unevenly.
But how much, is the question. It seems to me that in a mile's distance 1 tire turning 6 more times than another, seems trivial...but I'm no BMW engineeer...that's for sure! Geeze, I just want to get these tires figured out so I can place an order, LOL! |

It's actually 0.995% but everyone rounds it up to 1%, does that make sense? At 1.00% the differential will actually explode killing everyone inside the vehicle.

Ok, but here's my question: how big does the difference have to be before the polar bears come for you? My biggest concern is getting eaten by polar bears.
