50th Anniversary Roundel
A few of us over at the M2 forum have added the 50th Anniversary roundels to our cars.
I was wondering what other forum members think of the roundel and whether they have or are thinking about adding them. Not sure about the forum rotating my picture. |

I like them a lot! |

It's interesting, but overall I don't care for it and wouldn't want it on my car. It's not that its ugly, just that the actual Roundel part is small and kinda lost amongst a bunch of half circles. I want my Roundel to look like a Roundel. Call me old school...

Unable to find the correct size for my E82 with Apex wheels, I turned to Amazon and ordered a set consisting of (4) hubcaps, (1 each) trunk and hood emblems (the rear won't work on the unique E82 trunk badge), and a steering wheel emblem. Seven items in all. $29. Now I'm not naive enough to think that these would be OE emblems but two-days later I was surprised to see an old-OE-style metal badge with four tabs crimped over what appeared to be an OE hubcap base which said "BMW" and "Italy" on it. This is the way the new style hubcaps first came from BMW when they went away from the peeling mess of old-style mylar emblems. The hood and trunk emblems had the exact same back as OE badges. It is obvious to me that the "BMW" part of the emblem is larger than the OE 50th-Anniversary badges making the M-color segments a bit narrower. But I have 120mm bolt-pattern wheels and hadn't been able to find the OE caps' part number to order. These fit my car perfectly and I like the look. I'm sure they come from China but I can't prove it. The proportions may be slightly off, but they look good to me.
I do have a factory set of four hubcap emblems for the 112mm bolt-pattern wheels, and I have the part number for those. Oddly enough, BMW shows none of these available in the USA, but several hundred in Germany maybe waiting to be installed on new cars. And then, perhaps less odd, today the parts (and seller) I bought off Amazon have disappeared from that site. Odd only because you can still buy all the "copy" Alpina hubcaps and emblems you want (now a wholly owned subsidiary of BMW AG), but not the 50th Anniversary "copies". Even more strange, I ordered a black gloss M5 badge for a colleague's new M5 from our parts department and it came from BMW labeled "made in China". Back in the old days when this 50th-Anniversary emblem was the actual emblem for BMW "Motorsport" before there was an "///M", I collected quite a few Cloisonné Motorsport badges we used to put on our BMW RS bikes. I still have a drawer full and in many cases these were sold by authorized BMW dealerships. I even bought the reissue of the Motorsport team jacket BMW brought back last year, having owned an original 20-something-years ago that I gave to a friend. But now BMW is keeping these badges close to the vest for some reason, forcing loyal owners like me to the grey market. Anyone know the part number for the actual OE 68mm 50th Anniversary hub-cap? Too much white, stands out too much on the car in my opinion. I don't hate it, I just like the regular version better.

Nope, that's the correct one for youse guys' 'modern' BMWs but that's since BMW went to the smaller bolt circle on their wheels and hence a smaller hubcap. The E82 1-series takes a 120mm hub circle and needs a 68-mm cap.

I have a 2023 M550i on order and initially had the standard BMW badging optioned. The more I looked at the 50 year badge, the more I liked it and switched my order to include them. Some will dig it and some will not.

It looks good to me on red, white, or blue vehicles, especially when the exterior color hue is close to those in the badge. Otherwise it just reminds me of aftermarket badging.
We selected them when ordering a Frozen Portimao Blue Metallic i4 M50. But we left it off when ordering a Frozen Pure Grey Metallic X7 M60i (with black wheels). |

I like the idea of the 50th badges and what they mean. But I do think it could be cool making them a little different... What do you guys think of this?

Also, the idea that they charge an extra $200 for them is crazy.

I hear ya. I struggle with this too. I like the 50th design but don't care for how the actual Roundel shrinks up like George Costanza in a cold lake in February.
