SCR tank

Anyone know what the Passive-tank fill-level sensor does? I get a code of 4BCC which indicates my sensor is busted and wouldn't you know it BMW engineered the tank so that you can't just replace the sensor but you have to replace the whole damn tank. I have never had my DEF low enough to get a warning to refill and only takes about 1.5 to 2 gal. max of def at each oil change (approx. 7,000 miles)....So do I really need to spend $1,600 on a new tank or can I just continue with life and not worry about it. Thanks
