please help
Hi Guys,
i am new to e90post and have few questions. I have 2006 bmw 330i 6 speed manual. 1. lately, when i turn my car off with gear in Neutral, foot off the clutch i noticed a noise from under the hood of the car (possibly from engine or transmission)... .............but noise goes away if i press the clutch. do any of you guys have the same problem? or is this a problem at all? 2. one of my mug flag (left rear) is broken, where should i go to have it replace? dealership cost like 200 or more.. oh if you guys all have any useful info. or things like to share go ahead. thank you! |

If you push in the clutch then you are disconnecting the transmission from the eninge, therefore you won't hear the noise. If you had a lightweight flywheel then the noise would be much much louder.

1. is normal. It's called the "death rattle". Goes away if you depress the clutch when you shut off the engine. Has something to do with the flywheel and clutch still engaged even when you're in neutral.

The appropriate term is "gear lash" noise. We have dual mass flywheels in our cars that are supposed to absorb most of the vibration/noise. When thinking of a transmission, the gears have a certain amount of slop in them so this is where the sound comes from. It's perfectly normal.
