n53 engine - oil consumption/leak and cold start issue
Hi all,
Just trying to get to the bottom of two issues on my N53 (325i) and was hoping someone who may have experienced the same/similar can chime in. I had a oil leak which was coming from the rocker cover gasket and oil filter housing. I replaced this and also changed the oil filter housing and oil cooler, as that had a leak too. However I still get a smell of oil after running the engine for a while and switching off. There appears to be no leaks anywhere, but it seems to consume a 1l every 1,000 miles. Is this normal? If not, is there any other weak points which might be consuming/leaking oil? Second is cold start. On cold start, I get a moment where it feels like the engine misses a beat but then gets back to normal straight after. Its like a sudden dip in idle speed. I did change spark plugs to no avail. Any suggestions or pointers on what to look for will be great |

Check for leaks from the valve cover itself (can get hairline cracks from heat cycles and oil runs into plug or injector cavities). If you're smelling oil, it normally indicates drips getting on to the exhaust manifold, so check that carefully. Otherwise the sump gasket is the most likely - though at your rate of consumption I'd expect to see something dripping under the car. If there's no external sign of leaks then the oil must be being burnt internally and I would suspect the crankcase breather system in the valve cover. When I changed my VGC, on my indy's advice I replaced the whole cover for that reason.
If the missing a beat on cold start is a single hiccup, this is a known issue believed to be a software glitch that there's no cure for. A more prolonged misfire would indicate a dodgy injector. Good luck!

Wow first I've heard of this glitch but have it occasionally. It's usually a sign that my battery needs a charge.
