Blowing smoke since catless and MHD
Recently installed some catless downpipes and had the mid cats removed on my 07 335i.
Installed MHD prior to removing the mid cats and everything was running nicely. Had it on Stage 0 with Throttle Lag Fix, Wastegate Rattle Fix and Burble ( I know.. ) As soon as I got the midcats removed I started noticing blue/white smoke out the exhaust at idle. Did some testing with settings in MHD to see if I could find a culprit, for a while it was looking like it was the Throttle Lag Fix that was causing it as it would go away when I disabled it. Ended up backing everything off, throttle fix to 20%, Burble to soft 1s and wastegate rattle fix off. Things were going well until I turned onto my street with a couple downshifts at which point I pretty much coal rolled my entire neighborhood... Fml.. at this point I completely disabled everything and that helped, for now anyway.. At this point I'm trying to figure out what to do. I don't have the cash to do proper upgraded turbos at 2-3k usd.. do I try high+low catch cans, do I try a new valve cover and PCV, do I pull and rebuild the turbos, do I pick up some eBay turbos and risk them only making it 5000k, do I burn the car to the ground and forget I ever decided to buy a bimmer.. am I way off and there's a simple fix or a test I can do to figure out what's going on? Banging my head off the wall here and hoping someone's got some useful insight. Thanks! |

The cats were burning that smoke that's either coming from your pcv system and/or turbos. Most likely it's your turbos....that's a pretty common issue on these cars.

This car has been pretty damn expensive to daily, so far I've replaced: motor, injectors, coolant reservoir, water pump, thermostat, 5 radiators ( don't ask ), blower motor (x2), blower solenoid and a dp v-band clamp. Figured I had to be getting close to the end but it seems it never does. I've had the car all of 4 years and so far a lease payment on a new car would have actually saved me money 🤦 Last edited by esemze; 09-03-2022 at 07:56 PM.. |

For turbos most of us like the RB turbos. Yes they are expensive cars to maintain.

Yeah...these cars aren't ideal for daily driver, especially if you don't have a backup car. When stuff breaks...it's pricey to repair, especially if you can't do the work yourself.
As far as turbos go.....if you want something reliable, go with RB's....all the other ones out there are cheap china junk that's just going to fail on you and make you spend more money having to replace them again. |

Turbos are done. Stop the burble, seriously. You're only going to progress their death further and kill any new ones.
If you want a rebuilt OEM set, do the RB OEM Billets. Ask me why I know... lol
