1000 miles maiden trip home from PCD - new M240i observations & notes

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
At long last, I took delivery at PC last Friday October 14 and did a solo drive back to Milwaukee. Some observations:

• This was my first “PCD” and it was worth it. The instructors are great, as is the genius who went through my car upon delivery. While I expected to do some “performance driving”, I did not expect to take a X5 on the “off road” course, which was a fun surprise. I also found the plant tour fascinating. As a bonus, the center was preparing for the big 50th Anniversary of M the following day (Saturday, October 15) where the new M2 was shown. Got to see some very cool race cars as they were being unloaded. I am going back for a driving school within the next year.
• If you do PCD, give yourself a little time to explore nearby Greenville. I had no idea what to expect, but the city was really a really nice blend of shops, restaurants and green spaces – all with easy walking distance once you get downtown.
• Was on the tail of the dragon at sunrise on Saturday (around 7:30a) to avoid the typical weekend congestion. As a warm-up, I came in from the east via Highway 28 which is a great driving road as well. The run was nearly all to myself – and the couple cars I did encounter waived me by when it was safe to do so.

The car:

• There are a silly number of menus and settings to go through on ID8 – as the multiple displays all have stuff that can be selected. It doesn’t appear the content is truly customizable (eg I cannot select the info I want to see into a single view). The new display is a mixed bag for me. I’m not fan of the driver display – it looks awkward behind the steering wheel and I prefer the traditional instrument pod as seen on the 2022’s. I have, however, come around to loving the second display for maps and Apple Carplay (which has glitched out on me a couple times). [Update: I note Apple Carplay goes in and out in the same spot of my daily commute. There are 3 cell towers located at the intersection, and my guess is it must interfere with the wireless Carplay connection?]
• The H&K option sounds good enough and I probably won’t modify it (famous last words).
• Can we please leave the Stop/start button on the dash next to the steering wheel? And after training me to hit the park button on the shifter, BMW moves it to the center console as well…I still find myself reverting to my old habits
• I didn’t think would ever need “auto hold”, but I sure got used to that feature very quickly at long stoplights!
• I wish my optioned rhombicle trim extended over the glove box
• If you just are casually cruising, the car does well on MPG given weight, AWD and power. I was in “comfort” mode and set cruise control between 80-85 on the interstates and never dipped below 32 MPG. There was one stretch where I was 90-95 (thank you Audi R8 wherever you are) and still managed 28 MPG. Despite this, the tank seems a tad small at somewhere under 14 gallons.
• The car is surprisingly quiet; however, I do have the summer tires (Pirelli’s – as I did not opt for ZTK) which makes a difference vs run flats.
• Suspension is very good. Again, in comfort mode it soaks up quite a bit of broken pavement, potholes, railroad crossings and the like. When in sport (as we did at the PC), it firms up as expected and corners well.
• As much has been expressed about the 240 being overweight and the brakes underwhelming (again, non-ZTK here), I didn't find anything really notable in either area. I did overcook a couple of corners on the tail, and the brakes seemed more than adequate to bring my speed/heart-rate down.
• Also as noted everywhere, the steering really doesn’t offer a lot of feedback. I also find the steering wheel itself a bit too thick for a comfortable grip in hard cornering.
• Speaking of cornering, there is something clanging in the trunk in these situations. I think the flat tire air compressor has too much play (the tie-down strap and Velcro strips are pretty weak)
• The auto climate program has greatly improved since my last BMW (f30), as it is much more intelligent to the outside temperature – eg the heat kicked in a bit more as the outside air got colder and inside temps remained at the same temp. While this further reduces the demand for fixed HVAC controls – I would still prefer them over the “orphaned” audio volume knob and track forward and back buttons that I have yet to use (I use the steering wheel controls).
• The adaptive headlights (premium package) are excellent – this is the second car I have had with full LED headlights and they are a vast improvement vs halogen or xenon. This was a huge confidence booster on highway 28 (leading to the tail of the dragon) as it was still pretty dark out.
• Digital key: Love it, but cannot figure out why my profile is not loading in the car when I unlock the door (I have it enabled via my profile). Will try to remove it and re-install to see if that does the trick [Update: I realized the genius did not connect the digital key to my profile, although I was certain she did as we discussed it when we set up everything. I have enabled it and it works just fine]

Some pics from the PC – it will never be this clean again…ever. BTW I installed the "Tommy L Garage" splash/rock guards in the parking lot of the Zentrum center

Interesting post. Thanks for sharing.

Questions about the PCD... checking their site they said it's a no cost option and they provide the complementary night at the Marriot the previous evening?

The car looks great so I wonder if you think the detailing they did to make sure it looks as good since its practically a factory pick up, do you think they may have taken the effort and do paint correction?

Were you able to control yourself and stay in "break-in" limits during your drive through the Dragon's Tail?

Also, if you don't mind sharing your order specs? Thx.

Yes - it’s a no cost option. You do have cover the travel cost to get yourself there (and back home in the event you don’t drive the car home). They cover a night in the Marriott as well as dinner and breakfast there - and you get lunch at the experience center. It also includes a guest - and the guest is welcome to do the driving parts as well.

I would say the detailing was very good - not sure if they did any formal paint correction - but I didn’t notice anything alarming. However I am not overly OC about that kind of stuff. The interior was really clean - no fingerprints on the screens - which lasted all of 5 minutes once the genius started reviewing everything.

The tail wasn’t too challenging to manage with the break in period. It’s hard to get too fast given the 300+ turns - and having plenty of torque and awd on tap makes it fairly easy to keep the revs low.

The biggest challenge keeping it under 100 was the interstates. The car moves so easily at speed - and I nicked 100 on a soft pass to get ahead of some congestion.

specs: premium package, H&K, rhombicite trim, performance non-run flats.

one miss on my part - the lumbar support - not sure how I missed it, but I do wish I had it for the long trips.

PC Hotel included

Yes the delivery at PC includes the night prior at Hotel and evening meal.

It is all very organized they do it about everyday?

PC delivery is well worth the time if you can manage it.

We rented a car one way to greenville and turned it in at airport. Called the hotel and they picked us up there very easy process.

I have TN ordered on my car being built week 45. The lighting that makes it look dark like yours is very nice.

I really hope I can do it again someday. In my group were 5 SAV's (as BMW's refers to them) and 3 cars. I was the only M240i - the other two were M4 competitions. My novice skills and their extra 100+ hp was pretty noticeable on the driving portion - I was sandwiched in the middle and the lead car was walking away, whereas the one behind me was consistently closing the gaps (FYI the instructors keep a 20-30 second gap between the cars and will radio you to stop if you get too close to the car in front of you).

I was told they do up to 8 deliveries a day M-F.

My car was one of the ones just inside the front entrance where we all walked in. Opposite it was a brooklyn grey X7 also being delivered - quite a contrast in size and color!

TN looked pretty flat inside - but all of the flake started to really pop when the pulled it out the front door (it was a beautiful day).

They shuttled me in a X5 - both from the airport to hotel and then to downtown. Hotel driver (Keith) was really great - once we got downtown he told me where to go and even some shops that I might find fun. Incidentally, he told me the best place for local BBQ (given it is South Carolina) is actually closer to the hotel.

Hoping you get your car on time and enjoy it!

Congrats on the car!!

I just did an 'M Track Day' event at Monticello yesterday, and we got to autocross the M240i, and it was such an awesome little machine!

I think the color suits it perfectly!

Congratulations on the new M240i. I recently picked up a 2022 M240iXDrive and really like it. I was going to order a new 2023, but really hate the look of the "billboard" screen that looks like it was superglued over the dash. I also hate that they removed some of the physical buttons such as the climate controls, so I went with the 2022. As you noted, the Harmon Kardon sound system is much improved over the same system in my 2016 M235i. I am an audiophile and really appreciate this upgrade to the sound system. The 2022 is much quieter than my 2016 was; it had a more "raw" and sporty feel, probably due to the lighter weight and sport cat I had installed. The new car has a much more premium feel to the interior and the leather seems better than in the 2016, so kudos to BMW for that. This is my 5th new BMW and possibly my last as I have no interest in any of the EV cars, including BMW's. I hope this one will last me for "the duration". Enjoy your beautiful new M240i!

Another person in our delivery group took the Blue Ridge Parkway and loved the drive thru Pisgah Forest.

FYI the traffic around Asheville was pretty brutal at PM rush on Friday. I stayed in Nantahala forest area my first night - which was really beautiful and had some great roads around it...

I will be passing through that same area but I will not do it lol. I’m gonna keep to the break in schedule and just go back another time. It’s only 2.5-3 hours from me

Did you have any issues scheduling? I spoke with my sales rep and this is what he told me

"I spoke with management and we can't offer performance center delivery. We have another client requesting it for a different vehicle and the performance center is a month behind on deliveries"

Yet when I go on the website and look at openings they have openings once a week except December 9th.

They are a little behind and very busy but I had no issue getting my delivery there. Where are you seeing their openings?

Either way, sounds like your dealership just doesn't want to deal with it.

All of the dates for next month have at least 1 opening. Assuming the filter I chose that says performance center drive is correct. I agree it does sound like it. For the longest time he said they were closed due to covid yet I have not seen any sign of that.

Those are dates for the Performance Center Drive experience, not the schedule for Performance Center Delivery. They do delivery 5 days a week as far as I know. Your dealer is certainly lying to you if they told you that it was closed for COVID recently. This board is filled with examples of people who have picked up there in the last few months. I'm sure it was closed during the height of the pandemic though.

Very interesting. I did not have issues other than the stop sale. I suspect this may be more about the dealer not wanting to delay delivery more then they have to? I just stopped in my dealer last Saturday as they all wanted to see it, and they seemed pretty enthusiastic about the PC option :

From what I’ve read, the dealers don’t get the option for any additional financing options, warranties etc…that’s potentially why the dealer is being hesitant about offering you the PCD. I may be wrong though just my 2 cents.

This isn't true. You still have to sign the paperwork at the dealership (unless you're doing a deal out of state) and that gives them the opportunity to offer you their warranties and all that.
