Teaching GF how to drive stick.... doh!

Question ....

Im teaching my girl how to drive stick this weekend, and seeing that i dont have a car anymore, im gonna go to Rent-A-Wreck and get like a 92 Focus MT .

What im planning on doing is driving her about 2 miles from my house and telling her to come backk without any instructions, thats how i learned, by myself. You think i should make her watch like a youtube video or something, cause i cant teach her myself, too frustrating.

What is the best way to not just teach someone how to drive stick, but to help them understand what is going on?

Something that I found works well when teaching someone to drive a manual is to go to a large parking lot and make them drive around without using the gas pedal. This really helps them understand the "catch point" on the clutch. Just my 2 cents! Good luck!

I taught my wife and nephew to drive stick. Patience is required, but you can help by minimizing the instructions and keep the initial session to first and second gear, maybe third too. If you don't have the patience and give too many instructions at the same time, it could be actually counterproductive.

To start off, put in first gear and let out clutch slowly without pressing gas, car should not stall and should move no problem, assuming flat surface.

1st gear, neutral, 1st gear, neutral, 1st gear, neutral, repeat over and over until she's comfortable with the catch point. Obviously diff cars are easier to learn than others. I learned at a school parking lot

The biggest thing is not to get frustrated, if you are constantly putting pressure on someone while learning stick, they are gonna be to nervous to understand what is going on. I would give her a brief explanation of how a manual transmission works and what happens when the pedal is pressed down and when it is released and engaged. And like mentioned above, starting off with no gas is also a good idea just make sure its done in an open area with a flat surface or a slight decline, and work your way up.

I didn't know you could rent cars that were stick shift, except those high end exotic car rentals. My roomate was looking to rent a stick shift car, and he thinks the cheapest stick rental is a Lotus Elise. hahaha.

Good luck teaching your gf..ive never had the balls to teach my gf.

ps. anyone know where to rent stick shift cars in OC for cheap?

tell her to keep the rpms's between 1 an 2 thousand and ease out the clutch slowly

Bingo. Best way to get a new driver to learn clutch operation and engagement point.
