Exhaust Help Needed

Looking for an exhaust modification to do to my 2011 335i Xdrive. Would like to keep it around $400, and would like some burbles as well as including a moderately loud sounding tone. Any recommendations? I already have a Dinan Stage 2 and was wondering if an MHD tune would interfere at all.

Idk abou the Dinan stage 2, but I would go with MHD as that's the only platform that's gonna carry the n55e in the future. as for exhaust at 400 dollars I would do the downpipe if you haven't already and from there maybe the "
PE" mod to the stock mufflers

This. You will get all the noise and burbles you're looking for, as well as very decent power gains.

would you recommend a catless or catted downpipe, and which brand? I was looking at VRSF potentially

My 11 n55 is straight all the way back. Running VRSF catless DP and then the rest was fabricated from a local shop. Local shop was about 400$ with a nice set of tips. Car sounds like an absolute animal, always get compliments. Now If you drive in normal a lot it can drone when the car is in 6th gear doing 45. I typically drive in the M/S mode sounds and shifts better in my opinion. Hope this helps some

For the burbles, I have MHD and tuned it where they only come on in the M/S mode so that when in normal drive I've not bothered by them. It allows you to adjust the aggressiveness as well as how long they last after letting off the gas. Mine where on medium and sound like gun shots lol. So be careful

I'm debating on the MHD. If I want to buy it, do I have to purchase the full license as well as the adapter? If that's the case, $400 would be spent very quickly which I would not prefer.

Start with the downpipe. You will get a lot of pops & bangs and if you then still want more, you can later get MHD and activate its burbles function.

Catted vs catless depends on a few things:
1) Catted downpipe will cost more than $400
2) You will not pass the emissions with a catless downpipe, so if going catless, you'll need to reinstall the original downpipe for the emissions test
3) Catless downpipe will smell a lot, catted downpipe will likely throw a CEL.

VRSF either way, it's what most people are using.

How often do emission tests take place? Haven't ever had to have one on my car and everybody I know says they've never had one on theirs. Also how expensive would installing each version be if I were to take it to a shop?

No idea about the laws or the prices in Ohio as I'm from a completely different part of the world..
Hopefully somebody else can answer these questions for you.

I'm going the same route, running a VRSF catless and swapping back to the original in time for TUV.

Go with a catless downpipe and MHD. after that you can decide if you want to do more with muffler and such

So I was quoted $350 for installation on Downpipe. Was wondering if doing a muffler and resonator delete would be a good option and if anyone knows if install would be cheaper on that? I think install on Downpipe was too expensive just because of extensive dismantle of car to put it in.

Downpipe on the XI's are a pain in the ass. Try a few BMW specific tuner shops around you and choose one. If you already have a downpipe have it installed before doing any muffler changes because it makes the car sound a lot different. You also need a stage 2 or 2+ tune which will make the car a lot more fun compared to just sounding louder with a muffler delete but no more power

So I’m not doing the Downpipe anymore because it’s too expensive, but I do have a Stage 2 Tune already installed. Would the muffler and resonator delete sound good with that you think? I’m also not sure if my car comes with a resonator tho because when looking it up online since I don’t have access to check myself, it appears my car may not have one, but again I’m not too sure.

You may want to reconsider, you'll get a definite performance bump from a catless downpipe, it's totally worth the cost. $350 is a good price, I paid double that getting mine installed. The stock exhaust is already actually really well flowing. Bang for buck (power wise), catless down pipe is a really good mod. I also agree with the comments that it will change the sound of the car quite a bit. Much more agressive when you get on the gas, and you can actually hear the turbo spool through the exhaust once you get the cat out of the way. Just my $0.02😁

I would do it, but I’m on a budget of around $400 and can’t really afford to be spending $650 to buy and install the catless downpipe as much as I want to. That’s why I’m opting for the muffler and resonator delete because I think it would still sound good (not sure exactly but from videos I’ve seen) and it also seems that it won’t cost anywhere close to the other price for the downpipe.

Modding the exhaust will give you the noise without the power gains. You will definitely like the power gain from a downpipe, so I also agree that it would be smart to do the downpipe first. It's very possible that you don't feel the need for further exhaust changes after that.

stage 2 tune is specifically meant for a car with a downpipe installed. If ur mechanically inclined and have any friends with cars you could do it in a day easily. Just watch video and drop the subframe a bit (bolts are long enough to get a good amount of clearance)

Also i believe all 2011 335xi come with secondary cats, no resonators. It will be hard to find a shop that will delete those and replace them with resonators or something.

so if i did go that route, I would have to get a secondary cat delete instead of the resonator delete? How much would that change things? Same sound?
