Strange icon
I have a 3 week old 2009 328i with Navi. I also use a bluetooth phone, which works quite well with the system. When I am on the nav screen I get an indication of signal strength, and sometimes I get a little icon of a phone handset. That makes sense, I think the BMW is telling me there is a phone paired. But lately, I only see the handset icon when I am making a call. Then after a few days it goes back to showing me the handset icon whether I am making a call or not. Nothing in the manual about this. Anyone have any ideas? Software bug maybe?
Thanks Mel |

Wow- thanks for that tip... I don't believe I've had a missed call.. as I am in the car with the phone... is there a page number in the manual you can direct me to? I have the PDF and could not find the symbol. I searched the PDF for 'missed call' and it took me to a page that said there was an icon for it, but I can't find the icon.
Anyway thanks, you may have the answer but I don't remember missing any calls... Mel |

Go to the Phone menu and erase all your calls and the icon should go away. |

Actually, I don't have the icon now, and haven't erased anything on those menus. I'm wondering if eventually it just stops displaying on its own and times out. Anyway, good theory. I'll test it by using a second phone to call my cell phone and see if the icon appears. Thanks again.

That's it. The icon with the handset and the little cross on it is for a missed call. It must go away on its own after awhile. Mystery solved.
Since I'm here, do you know why the voice phone book doesn't work on the 328i with iDrive? The system does download my address book from my cell phone and I can dial those up by voice, but it doesn't seem to recognize the 'save name' command for doing a voice phonebook. Maybe it is not really an option on my car? Thanks again for answering the icon question. I would never have figured that one out. Mel |

Thanks again Technic. My 3281 manual (page 178) says I can say 'save name', followed by a phone number to set up a voice phone book. That is supposed to be in addition to the voce selection of bluetooth downloaded address book from m phone. When I say 'save name' as stated in the manual, nothing happens....

I think that there is a mistake in that 2009 iDrive manual as in describing the "Low" Voice tags feature with a maximum of 50 entries instead of the "High" version with Voice Phonebook without any names quantity limit. It is either that or the 2009 iDrive supports both depending of the type of Bluetooth phone support used, as there are phones that do not support Voice Phonebook thru Bluetooth. |
