M CEO Frank van Meel hints of a next generation M2 EV ?

BIMMERPOST

This is interesting stuff and I'm intrigued to see what wizardry they be able to do with an M car that has 4WD, independent EV motors for each wheel. That said even if they offered an EV M2 today I'd still get the G87 ICE car. If you have to ask why then I guess you don't get it yet.
Quote:
It’s possible that this technology could find its way into an EV successor to each current M car, which raises the intriguing proposition of a quad-motor, compact coupé in the vein of today’s M2 – a model that stands to benefit most obviously from the compact footprint, low centre of gravity and even weight distribution afforded by such a powertrain.

Van Meel hinted that such a car is on the cards, telling Autocar that M “will try to also offer in the future cars in this price range”, referring to the M2’s £60,000 starting price as the gateway to the M line-up.

Given that the second-gen M2 (M’s final pure-combustion car) is only just on its way to dealerships, an EV successor would no doubt be several years off, but the model’s critical and commercial success means BMW is unlikely to retire it after only two iterations.

M’s final pure combustion car? I hope that comment ages like milk.

If BMW ends up making an EV M car that is the line, I will stop at nothing until the headquarters is flames and shambles. Any time you cut these guys some slack they just manage to make you want to hate the brand even more.

It is the future of awd tech. Being able to independently control torque at each wheel is a game changer. Rivian is the only EV manufacturer currently selling quad motor EVs, besides 2mill+ Rimac Nevera.

I've been thinking about this for a while, what the repercussions of these heavy vehicles means in an accident. Some weigh so much it's almost like getting hit by an 18 wheeler. I've also wondered what increased wear they'll put on roads over time as well as what negative impact they have if people don't pay attention to road weight limits.

I thought of accidents but not wear and tear on roads. Very interesting. I’m from NYC where the roads are already notorious! If it gets worse forgettaboutit

I have coworker that purchased a Rivian R1T new. He initially drank the Kool-Aid, but it wore off quickly. The build quality is less than desirable, and the after sales support is mediocre at best, both understandable given that it is a start up. It was impressive what it can do for a truck, especially given what it weighs. He learned quickly that if you are a EV owner and not within the Tesla network the EV infrastructure is absolutely horrible and it has a long way to go. In the end he flipped it.

Did you read their Mercedes-beating record-breaking sales numbers for 2021?

EV sales were up by over 120%

Why wouldn't they do an EV M car?

It's all about numbers my friend

I can't wait for a true M EV car, why wouldn't we want this? Its not like the new M engines sound any good anyways compared to the past.

Time to embrace progress, i fully plan to get the 718 EV when it comes out and then eventually an M EV.

My iX is one of the best BMWs i've ever driven, i love it. Can't wait to see what else they do.

It is going to be many, many years before we see ICE and their required fuels fully killed off. In fact, if you were born in the late 60s to early/mid 80s it is doubtful either will be eradicated within your lifetime.

Uh... I mean it will eventually run out. The timescale might be in question but we're using it a hell of alot faster than it's being produced. (Basically not at all)
