Should I move from X3 30i to a Tesla Model Y

I know this is a bmw forum so there may be some bias but I'm looking for any advice about selling my 2021 X3 for a Model Y Long Range.

Heard the suspension on the MY is now better but keep reading things about build quality, creaks/squeaks etc. My X3 is a great vehicle but I'm very inclined about the Tesla tech. Just don't want to change and end up regretting the Tesla.

Appreciate the help!

Stating the obvious, one would need to know far more to even consider a suggestion. How much are you into cars, what are your favorites, what and who do you haul around and how often, and so on. There are 100 factors you have to give info on.

Hell no. I drove a tesla plaid for like an hour. Acceleration gets boring, plus it's GARBAGE for my tastes. I'm not a straight line warrior or drag strip queen. I like track focused cars and teslas are GARBAGE for that purpose. AS a matter of fact so are SUV'S, but I'm assuming maybe this is a family car. In that case get a bmw ix. The only thing I liked about the tesla plaid was showing other cars around me on the dash screen.. Until I found out bmw has the same feature.

Ix looks way better interior wise and more luxurious. Stop being an Elon fan boy. He's a child minded idiot and so are his idolizers and worshippers

Lol. How do you really feel?

OP, do some balanced research and see if makes any sense. If keen on EV’s in general, there are other brands. Compare your electricity rates, if you’ll be able to install a L2 charger at your home, and any incentives that are available with your city and or state.

As an owner of two Tesla’s (M3 & MY) along with my F80, each has its upsides and downsides but it depends on what you’re looking for. There’s already a lot of vitriol on Bimmerpost about EV’s and Tesla in general but many owners love their Teslas. Musk is quite a polarizing person and seemingly has become even more so as of late. Won’t deny he’s becoming quite eccentric but Tesla does build a decent vehicle for the masses.

I recently went with the Genesis GV60. I like it a lot. I do have a prejudice (I would never buy a Tesla) but Carsdirect.com compared the two and favored the GV60:

https://www.carsdirect.com/compare/l...-tesla-model-y

IMO it would have been an easy call to purchase a competitor to the Y. But the recent price cut on the Y may move the value factor toward the Tesla.

Just be sure that the Model Y does what you need. Aside from my anti-Tesla prejudice, I would never buy a car where I have to turn to the side to see how fast I am going and where all the adjustments have to be made by the touchscreen. If those issues don't bother you, the Tesla could work for you.

Not sure I understand why people keep stating that they have to “turn” to see how fast they’re going. Your eyeballs shift slightly to the right instead of looking down at your speedo. And you can use voice commands to control a lot of things. Using Autopilot to stay in your Lane while you fidget may be inherently safer than trying to use controls and looking away fr the road on your typical non-tech.

The GV was on my list as was the Mach-E but went with Tesla in the end because I don’t have an EV prejudice.

I will not buy a Tesla until they will start treating customers as vehicle owners I will accept being joint owner once they will give option to pay half the price. I genuinely hate business model not the vehicle itself.

OP, you already know the answer posting on this forum. There's a large population of folks here who are anti-Tesla. I suggest doing the research, driving both cars, and take it from there.

Yes, yes and yes. I love my Tesla, ‘22 S Plaid, wouldn’t buy anything else, heck, I even prefer it over three various M cars I have, they feel so dated now. Hug eBMW fan but give me a Tesla. The tech, safety, performance, feel, interior, etc. there’s a reason Tesla destroyed BMW in sales last yr and that it’s the best selling car in Europe.

Pretty big difference between a Model S Plaid and the Model Y the OP is asking about...the Model 3/Y are shit boxes inside and out (yes I've driven the "refresh". It doesn't hold a candle to a BMW interior/exterior quality). Tech is questionable as well. I'd take ID7 over the do everything screen in the M3/Y. And what about safety?

in a word, if you like the Tesla yes. if you don't like the Tesla no.

they are different cars.

it's like - should i sell my Iphone and get a Samsung? Should i sell my Windows PC for a Mac? well only you can answer!

from how you are phrasing the question - yeah go for it. but make sure you drive it before committing, they are completely different things

for me - after putting in an order for the Model 3 - i bought an Audi S4 and cancelled the 3
then i put an order for a model Y - ended up buying the M340i and cancelling the Y
then I put in an order for the EV6 - a month later I bought a M550i and cancelled the EV6 ...
i do have a Nissan Leaf though

Expect the range to be about 2/3 of advertised, especially on freeway road trips. My roommate has a 2021 Model 3 LR with about 36k that he's had since Dec'20 and we take it to Socal regularly. It will get around 200 miles at 90mph, compared to the ~350 claimed.

Why not a Mach E or Kia EV6?

Literally the only downside would be the lack of reliable public charging infrastructure.

The Model Y is a fine commuter but I just don't think it has much to offer in light of newer competition. Not to mention it's ugly as f*ck and one of the most common vehicles on the road. Would you be content shelling out X amount of money to drive the same car as everybody else?

I think the Model Y Performance look fantastic, it’s fast as heck (3.2 sec or less to 60), AWD, safe and has Tesla Charging. Winner winner!

Even the refreshed S and X suffer from extremely poor build quality. I test drive a new S and X over the weekend since I haven’t had the chance to do so on the refreshed models, and have been contemplating a Model S.

Within minutes of driving the X, I knew it wouldn’t compare to my X5. Loved the various features on the Tesla, but the Falcon Door wasn’t working because it needed recalibration, and the build quality was so poor that I kept having to check behind me to make sure that the doors weren’t open. The amount of creaks, rattles, and other build quality issues were a big turnoff.

I thought it I might just be a bad vehicle, and test drove the S next. Although build quality was a bit better, it still had noticeable creaks and rattles all over. I definitely preferred the S to the X, but any thought I had to buy one of these two models went out the window after this test drive.

These cars cost $100k or more - and from what the SC folks told me, it wasn’t a rare outcome to get a car with creaks and rattles. Love the tech and power train, but man…that build quality.

Yeah but you're clearly the forum Tesla fanboy, so your perspective differs from people on the fence like OP.

I'm not a Tesla fanboy and I completely agree with this. Other than look fantastic ... err ... on which planet ;p

The things that put me off the Tesla Y P is - suspension, lack of buttons, and lack of dash cluster. Other than that it's ok. WHere I live, it's also the cheapest EV for actual range interestingly. I don't want to complain about the sound insulation in this as my M340i is super noisy on the road from tire roar. Defeats the purpose of any sound system.

Loved the EV6 GT Line (not the GT-GT). It's far better than the M340i. But not the M550i ...

My brother in law has a model 3 it’s harder to get in and out of than a MG Midget I had as a kid. Sloppy workmanship and cheap looking components a waste of $60,000+
