But I heard theres a thing for CD players though, my cousins says if u want ur CD player's life to last longer it is best to switch out to some other audio before turning off the car? He says that will not damage the cd player's laser.

These rumors are bogus. I remember a friend in college who would never watch his big screen TV because he "didn't want to wear it out". Instead he put a sheet over it and turned it into a coffee table... Now seriously, I admit when I unplug my USB hard drive, I do switch to another source, although I'm not sure it makes a difference. With solid state equipment and cd players, etc it doesn't matter at all.

There shouldn't be any issues while reading from the device. It only becomes an issue if you were/are writing to the device. Then, if you do not go through the process of correctly shutting down, you risk corrupting the data.
