Modded 335i compared to an SLK55 AMG

Hi guys,

I just randomly went by the Mercedes dealership here to maybe see the new C63 they had an 06 SLK55 AMG and I took it for a drive. The V8 sounds awesome, but I felt like even with 380 whatever ft/lbs of torque there was no way it pulled as hard as my Vishnu 335i. It just seems with that little car and all its horsepower and noise it should fly. Has anyone experienced driving say an SLK55 or maybe something even bigger like the CLS55 that can give me an idea of what any differences are from a modded 335i?

Thanks,
Dimitri

I think ive just been really curious recently as to what other cars drive like. And I want to know if anyone else has felt the same and could give me some info on other autos.

the 335i is certainly the fastest car alive; if you are not sure of this fact, race it (stock, of course) against any and all competitors (or imagined competitors)...

It's not faster. I had a rendezvous with an 05 C55 AMG that has the same engine in it and pulled.

A CLS55 on the other hand... hahaahaha. That has the big boy engine in it. Back in the old days of E90post, there was a guy named Walked U that had some run-ins with M5s and CLS55s and he would tie them at best. I still don't think there are any cars up here as modded as his was except for the tuners and the and a couple others that put down 400whp+. The 55s that were put into the higher end models were much higher in output than the engines MB put into the SLK and the C.

Those little suckers are pretty quick, I lost to one pretty bad in my old E90 330. They have a curb weight of 3472lbs and seems they have a faster "Ring" time than a stock 335i.

A tuned 335i should win. Here are brand new test results of an '09 facelifted SLK55: http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightlin...hotopanel..2.*

Sounds meager next to the 500+ horses belted out by the bigger 6.3, but remember this is a 3,500 pound roadster.

Compared to the standard SLK350, the AMG model also gets a fully upgraded suspension, larger wheels and tires, and upgraded brakes. For the record, there's an even more aggressive AMG Performance Package available for an extra $7,000 that adds an even stiffer suspension, new wheels and revised brakes.

Skid Pad Lateral acceleration (g): .87
Handling Rating: Very Good
Db @ Idle: 48.4
Db @ Full Throttle: 80.3
Db @ 70 mph Cruise: 69.1

Acceleration Comments: With ESP on, the traction control system does an admirable job of containing the power. Shutting it off in "Drive Sport" ushered in a 1-2 short shift as the first hint of wheelspin. Had to resort to manual mode to achieve a decent launch, but then the slow tach had it hitting the rev limiter. Difficult, though not impossible, to get under 5.0 to 60mph and in the 12s for the quarter mile. Upshifts are sometimes slow/fast or smooth/harsh and I cannot determine why.

Braking Comments: Excellent brake power and fade resistance. New zero nose dive and pedal always felt trustworthy. Autobahn brakes.

Handling Comments: The very definition of "pushy-loose" where it understeers on throttle and snaps into oversteer when you jump out. Tenuous at best and dangerous at worst with ESP off in manual mode.

Like the skidpad, the SLK55 can be a handful in the slalom with ESP off in manual mode. That said, turn-in is crisp up to 9/10ths then starts to understeer. Throttle response is terrific, so a slide at the end is easily requested, but the short wheelbase makes it tricky to control. The PZeros step off pretty abruptly then slide predictably. This is how I imagine a V8 Monster Miata would feel.

the slk55 is a beast, i was about to get one when deciding 335i vs. slk although i also had the m roadster in mind with an e46 m3, c55, and clk55 at the time.

i got the 335i as to slk55 cause i needed the trunk and rear back seats. to me it was more practical of a car. now if i did get the car it would have ecu, intake, headers, and exhaust and that will give any tuned 335i a run for their money .
