Oil Temperature

Is there a way to bring up the oil temp on idrive 8?

Im used to having an temp guage on my E46 cluster and seeing as i do lots of 3 mile comutes I would like to know if im getting the oil warm enough.

Does it not show up in the Sport Screen, along with HP, TQ, and PSI? That's where mine is on iD7, although you cannot get an exact number.

May want to invest in something simple like BimmerLink to see exact values.

Isn't that just the water temp?

Yeah I have one but don't fancy leaving the bt obdc in permanently and it's not particularly convenient having to load apps, just thought it would be in the options somewhere

At the very least you could use it for a couple commutes to see where you stand. 3 miles is not far enough for BMW to consider the car warmed-up for performance driving.

Can confirm this does work on iDrive8. Use it all the time to determine when I can really ring it out. Usually I wait for oil temp > 200f to start getting at it

Where is this 'sports screen'?

Edit found it under adaptive content when in sport mode, hehe cool

The warm-up text is for the engine temperature (coolant temperature)

Its not the coolant temp in interested in mate,

Im not using the temp to let me know when i can rag it, if you dont get the oil hot enough moisture can condence and the oil tank gets a foamy scum in there if its ran like that for many months, my BMW Indi told me off about it last time i took the E46 in, so if i can get the oil to 80-100 degrees when i commute it will stop that happening, plus doing longer runs more regularly.

This engines oil gets warmer a lot quicker thatn the E46 is it due to the thinner oil?

80-90 degrees C won't cut it for the removal of moisture; ideally needs to be 100C+ to evaporate moisture in oil.

Thinner oil, especially in a cold engine, will dissipate heat quicker than thicker oil, so if anything the thinner oil is causing the engine to not heat up as quickly. This does not mean the engine does not warm up quickly, but just a difference in thin vs. not-as-thin oil.

I believe what contributes to fast warm-ups in the B58 is various valves and active radiator grills that are all part of the heat management system.

Oh I know what you are asking. I was just trying to address the warm up suggestion made above. Should have quoted it in my reply. Sorry for the confusion.

Add adaptive content to your Home Screen “dashboard”. The adaptive content sport mode widget will show power and torque, but just one press to open the full sport mode view with oil temp.

I’ve noticed this too. Old M135 took 15+ minutes to reach temp, M240 gets there in about 5 minutes. Must be the grill?

Yes indeed

Cooling System
The C/D engines have an innovative cooling design that separates the cooling supply into two zones: cylinder head and engine block. Not unlike different cooling zones in your house. The cylinder head and turbo receives a constant supply of coolant but cooling to the engine block can be reduced or turned off. During a cold-start, warm-up, or normal driving coolant circulates through the cylinder head and turbo but is cut off from the engine block. Only when needed is the valve to the engine block opened, allowing coolant to circulate through the crankcase. The water pump and thermostat are now part of this Heat Management Module (but available for replacement individually).
Note: the B58 is a C/D engine referenced above.

Yeah, that's the coolant temp and that does warm up much sooner than oil as I track both when I'm out the driveway.

Yes there’s a super easy way, set drive mode to sport and then on the iDrive menu click the adaptive display menu that has the car model. In sport mode it should show engine temp, HP and boost pressure

Little late to the discussion. Tried it today and it work well. didn’t have to push/flip thru multiple buttons/screens just to get one little info.

What would be lower end of operating oil temperature as you warming up, 180, 200F?

Mine always seems to top out at 232 degrees Fahrenheit. Curious if that is the case for everyone. It feels “warmed up” by 200.
