Oil Temperature
Is there a way to bring up the oil temp on idrive 8?
Im used to having an temp guage on my E46 cluster and seeing as i do lots of 3 mile comutes I would like to know if im getting the oil warm enough.

May want to invest in something simple like BimmerLink to see exact values. |

Yeah I have one but don't fancy leaving the bt obdc in permanently and it's not particularly convenient having to load apps, just thought it would be in the options somewhere

At the very least you could use it for a couple commutes to see where you stand. 3 miles is not far enough for BMW to consider the car warmed-up for performance driving.

Im not using the temp to let me know when i can rag it, if you dont get the oil hot enough moisture can condence and the oil tank gets a foamy scum in there if its ran like that for many months, my BMW Indi told me off about it last time i took the E46 in, so if i can get the oil to 80-100 degrees when i commute it will stop that happening, plus doing longer runs more regularly. This engines oil gets warmer a lot quicker thatn the E46 is it due to the thinner oil?

Thinner oil, especially in a cold engine, will dissipate heat quicker than thicker oil, so if anything the thinner oil is causing the engine to not heat up as quickly. This does not mean the engine does not warm up quickly, but just a difference in thin vs. not-as-thin oil. I believe what contributes to fast warm-ups in the B58 is various valves and active radiator grills that are all part of the heat management system. |

I’ve noticed this too. Old M135 took 15+ minutes to reach temp, M240 gets there in about 5 minutes. Must be the grill?

Yes there’s a super easy way, set drive mode to sport and then on the iDrive menu click the adaptive display menu that has the car model. In sport mode it should show engine temp, HP and boost pressure

Little late to the discussion. Tried it today and it work well. didn’t have to push/flip thru multiple buttons/screens just to get one little info.
What would be lower end of operating oil temperature as you warming up, 180, 200F? |

Mine always seems to top out at 232 degrees Fahrenheit. Curious if that is the case for everyone. It feels “warmed up” by 200.
