E91 318d N47N Hesitation on acceleration
Hi folks , I was wondering if anyone has had a similar issue to this:
My car always seemed to have a little hiccup about 100 yards from home, setting off from cold, but on the way back down from the Outer Hebrides last week, it started having a tiny hesitation when I was accelerating away from roundabouts. It's just a fraction of a second, but it's very noticeable. I've done some researching and the candidates seem to be Fuel Filter, MAF sensor, MAP Sensor, EGR valve? I've ordered a fuel filter as it probably hasn't had one, and it's done over a 100,000 miles now, so might as well change it anyway. I'll look deeper into testing these things, but if anyone has any advice, it would be gratefully received! |

sounds similar to when my EGR started to clog up... worth taking it off and giving it a good clean. easy enough and saves you throwing parts at it just yet

I have to say, the E91 does seem like a very straightforward car to work on, everything is pretty accessible and straightforward, good work BMW! |

+1 for egr, or maybe map.
Also consider checking the rear abs sensors/rings - I swear my partner's one would hiccup with no abs lights before it got really bad |

I finally managed to get around to having a look at the EGR. I'd watched a video of how to remove it etc, but then discovered mine was different, it looked easy to access though so I just got on with it.
Getting the Torx screws out was easy enough, but the clips on the pipes were a royal pain in the bum. I'm guessing they are one time use only. THe one behind the egr is extremely hard to get at as well, and too short to give much movement. Once I got it off, it didn't look crazy dirty, but it was sticking. So I cleaned it up with carb cleaner and a toothbrush until it was moving freely. I wasn't expecting the pipes to have water in them, so I guess this EGR is water cooled. Should have guessed they were too big to be Vacuum pipes though oops. I got it all back together okay with a new O ring, and she started up okay. The wife went out in it last night and had no bother. I went out this morning and the low coolant light came on, so must have lost a decent bit. There were no hesitations though, so it looks promising that the problem may be solved, but not conclusive yet. It's a bit stressful doing these jobs on our only car, but also very satisfying when it works out. Thanks for the tips folks, much appreciated! |

Oetiker ear clamps. Should have the size stamped on it, I think. But yeah, one time use only - easiest to cut them off by snipping through the ear. New ones are only £1-2 each, and can be crimped ok using side cutters or nippers IME. Special pliers do a better job, but ££ for decent ones.
