corteco dibration damper noise.

So at 150k my vibration damper failed.

Swapped it out for a new corteco kit with the bolts. All torqued and angled correctly.

But since the swap I've noticed some noise as i hit 3krpm that wasn't there before.

It's only as you approach 3k rpm. It does this when in neutral and driving.

I know corteco is meant to be oem but could this be the price I've paid by not going oem in this instance.

Anyone have any similar issues?

Thanks

Rich

You can try to add alternator clutch pulley which can absorb some of the vibrations abd make your damper last longer

So just to update this. I just swapped out the corteco one with a genuine part from bmw and the noise is all gone.

The were some slight differences in the bmw part and corteco one mainly in the rubber on the dampner.

Not sure if bmw is using a different material to dampen the noise.

Just fyi.

Thanks

There are two types of corteco pulleys, the "cheap" one and "expensive" one. The expensive one is supposed to be oem quality. Can anyone confirm this?

Get the FAI damper with clutched alternator pulley. Don't cheap out with the OEM replicas or another OEM pulley.

OEM pulley is just fine. People need to realize these need to be replaced every 100k or so.

Mine first failed at 67k miles in 2015. Was replaced by dealer with the OEM and it failed again at 124k miles in September 2020. It was replaced by a Fluidampr damper, an Alternator clutched pulley and a spacer. No problems so far with this aftermarket pulley.

Put on a Corteco which is an OE supplier for BMW on the wife's d and has been good for 60k so far. Wasn't cheap. She's been tuned with Jarek's 2.5 for 120k or so. Stay away from Chinesium, it does not belong on your Bimmer.

I am no expert, but what I've gathered is that these damper pulleys are there to cancel torsional vibrations of the crank. Rubber type pulleys work by absorbing these vibrations and turning them into heat thereby braking down themselves. So they are effectively a sacrificial part, it's either the pulley, or your crankshaft. So they are going to fail, if they serve as intended.

Some youtube experts have claimed that. Anecdotally, recently I searched for pulleys on my local trodo website and I noticed a corteco pulley for like 200 eur, which is not cheap. The next day that one was gone, and there was a corteco pulley for 150 eur, so substantially less. I didn't note the part number for that expensive pulley, and can't remember if there was the less expensive one on the list as well, but it seamed strange. Maybe some weird pricing fluctuation, or maybe some experts recognized it and bought it up immediately.

It's the pulley or the #1 main bearings. These definitely are a maintenance part.

Yes, definitely the #1 main bearings, especially on an M57 6-pot diesel.
