i'm using bmws in winters with 1 or 2 months of snow for 13 years

Mine does that sometimes and is pretty loud after I do an oil change.

Pretty much goes away after it gets warmed up.

Have you ever removed and checked your VANOS filters/check valves? If they are partially blocked they can restrict oil flow to the lifters or if the check valve has failed, the oil will not be retained in the galleries when the engine is not running. This might also cause lifter noise.

I should check those. I am occasionally getting the annoying ticks.

I have not yet and I know I have clean them. I had planned to replace the solenoids and clean the check valves but winter is upon the NorthEast and my garage is occupied with two projects and two tractors at the moment. So it most likely will be in March.
