2011 335D with 400,000km on it

I have a 2011 335D with an M57N2 engine and 400k kilometers on it, I want to mod it but I don’t know if it’s a smart idea.

Background: This car has spent its life in Ottawa, Ontario and never properly stored in winter, luckily though there is little to no rust. The was no preventive maintenance after the warranty was over on it, unless something was broken to the point of the car not starting.

The suspension is messed up, lots of oil leaks and many codes, bad vacuum lines, however, all the codes pertaining to the emission systems

Reduct tank, Egr cooler, NOx sensors, ect…

I’ve been considering doing a stage 2.8 race tune from JRauto (including the prerequisite mods such as EMISSIONS DELETE)

I was wondering if this would even be worth my time, money and sanity due to the car being on stock tranny and engine with 400k on the dash

Sounds like it's lived a hard life. If you did the deletes and addressed the oil leaks and suspension, do you think the rest of it is pretty solid? If so, seems like you could freshen it up without a ton of money going into it.

If cosmetically it's decent and will clean up, I think you should go for it! It has very little value with all the codes, leaks, etc. but if you can get her mechanically back to top notch, it oculd be a great car.

If the body and interior are clapped, I probably wouldn't invest in it.

See that’s the thing, I don’t really know. And another problem is it’s my only car at the moment. The 335Ds have crazy strong pig iron blocks that can withstand a lot of abuse and due to the diesel acting as a lubricant when it combusts it prolongs the lifespan of the engine in comparison to gas engines.
I’ve replaced some of the other internals but I don’t know what to expect

I’d fix the problems of the car before getting into mods. Kind of pointless to do the latter first.

Yes ignore the tuning, the likelyhood is the engine will be fine for more power but consider your safety first. That suspension wants to be top because the amount of torque these motors produce, itl happily send you off the road if the cars not on par! Brakes could use an upgrade too! They don't last long under loads.

Yeah… the body’s pretty messed up. I need a new front bumper + mounts + a dog lamp + wheel arch on the right side + rear bumper + paint job

Interiors still in pretty decent shape only on scratch on the front passenger seat but it’s not big or noticeable.

And that’s the thing, it has leaks and codes and all that, however, all the codes go away if I do an emission delete because EVERY code is emissions related.

The leaks aren’t the greatest… but I do work at a bmw dealer so I can get oem parts for cheaper than I can usually find online (there’s not many 335ds in Canada and IF I can find a specific part online it still usually ends up being more expensive than oem with my discount)

Yes. 100%. What I’m waiting to decide wether or not I should do the delete and fix her up before it touch the suspension.

If I’m gonna mod her up
It’s time for higher performance suspension

If I’m not I’ll just go with some good after market suspension

I should replace the brakes soon! But it’s not their time quite yet and same thing

If I’m gonna mod it
Performance brakes

If not
Oem brakes

Update: Not following through

Thank you all for replying to my question! But so many things have gone wrong with the car literally since I made the post…
So many things failed
It’s not worth it
It’s soon time to put it to rest

Hopefully it can’t last me till I save up for my next Beamer 🤞
