MHD Stage 1 on N55 with PWG
Hi guys,
As the title states, does any of you have a stage 1 from MHD on a stock, no modifications N55 with PWG? Is it worth it? Any idea how much HP it makes? (I'm interested mostly for 91oct and 93oct). Also, if you have some dyno numbers that would help alot. I know it has been discussed many times but most of the results show 1+ or 2, with modifications, E85 etc Thank you in advance! |

I do.
MHD is really powerful and has helped me identify some air leaks and fueling issues on my car along with being able to apply the OTS maps easily. Once my issues are able to be resolved it will enable easy comparison, but even with them Stage 1 feels like it has noticeably more torque. |

Thank you very much for the reply. Good to know. I also want first to check that everything is alright with the monitoring app and then go forward. I was thinking to upgrade the FMIC to go to the 1+, it should also be a positive mod for the car.
By the way, what problems did you have with the air leaks and fueling issues? |

I also have this setup on 2013 e93. MHD stage 1 with only a drop in K&N filter and a vrsf chargepipe. I think the tune provides a noticeable difference from stock. I always use 93 octane.
There is some great information here. There is an article on all the mods and the horsepower gains from those mods. https://bmwtuning.co/bmw-n55/ |

I also looked over the article, I really liked how comprehensive it is. The chargepipe is already taken care of, intercooler is next. I don't want to go overboard with catless DP etc because the whole idea is for the car to remain mainly stock so no emissions problems or with the authorities

MHD logs helped identify boost leaks that a smoke test confirmed on the pipes leading to and from the turbo. The cold start issue is a symptom of the HPFP failing and since replacing starts are as expected. MHD also exposed shadow codes relating to the LPFP and LPFP regulator so I replaced those also. |

Thank you very much for the input. Next, I need to do my research on spark plugs, to see exactly what to get because I see there are mixed reviews everywhere, including the gap.
Then, the rest will be full maintenance including coils and changing oil in the transmission and after that I will just for the intercooler and MHD |

I replaced the spark plugs and stuck with the stock plugs. I think they are sufficient for Stage 1 and Stage 1+

Mods for a solid mhd stage 1
Hello, just flashed stage 1 today in mine and the only mod I have is the vrsf catless dp. Everything runs okay and the car feels def more alive. I was wondering if it would be worth it to install the following (and if so which ones):
1. NGK 1 step colder Spark Plugs 2. Eldor coils 3. Charge pipe Thanks in advance! |

sparkplug and coil, simply keep an eye on it if you have missfire, you can get live data and missfire count. |

I am also really hoping to get my car back this weekend following further works to replace the Valvetronic actuator and other bits. I hope that this can be done with reusing the injectors to minimise on cost.
I know the mechanic has switched to the older Stage 1+ map on my car from the newer Stage 1 map, as apparently the logs were showing that the car preferred the older map and intake temperatures were OK with the stock intercooler. |

Since N55 will most likely put out less power, and came mostly on automatic zf8 cars, it's less documented. But higher power N55, I would do it, especially if you can put down all the torque in a launch. Its cheap and a nice precaution. Also my N55 was piggyback tuned , around 360bhp, I did not do this mod, all good. Also 165k km, still on the OEM charge pipe, but im using my luck for sure. |

What I would add to that list would be an intercooler, so you could go Stage 2+ given the fact that you already have the DP. |

Just installed MHD stage 1 at 10pm last night.
(N55e V1.60, PWG, 91 OCT, 6MT) Used the universal MHD WIFI adapter, took about 11 minutes total. Was super nervous I was gonna brick something, but just followed directions and everything went smooth. Besides all fresh fluids / regular maintenance, I installed the VRSF chargepipe and the crank seal guard before even thinking about tuning. Car feels/sounds awesome. Sorry no dynos or hp numbers, but as far as if it's worth it, I would definitely say yes. The cost was low and the results are noticeable. |

I am also planning this weekend to add the Stage 1 because I just finished with all the maintenance on the car and would like to try it. Maybe get an intercooler until this weekend and go directly to Stage 1+. Is the difference only with Stg 1 noticeable?

Yeah I'm looking at the MAD 5" from x-ph.com, driving around a little bit today the ambient temps were low 80's and IAT's were 111ish while driving and I know it's gonna be hotter in Oklahoma soon.
Like I said, I've only driven it around a little bit, but I can definitely notice the difference from Stock to Stage 1. Stock made the car feel kind of heavy, but smooth. Stage 1 feels snappy and racy in a way. |

Put on the charger again last night so I could switch my burble options this morning.
I had them on OEM .5s 3000minrpm and couldn't really hear them. I thought it would be a long write since I'm changing options but it took like 30 seconds. Switched to soft .8s 2200minrpm and my son and I had a great time hearing the tasteful burbles while I was taking him to school this morning. Here's a dashcam video with the windows down, car was still warming up a bit. Last edited by blackwood; 05-09-2024 at 10:23 AM.. |
