Wheel hop on launch

Anybody having wheel hop issues when using launch control?

When i dump the clutch in launch control it doesnt move for half a second and i hear a few knocks, then it takes off like a bat out of hell.

Everything is in sport/sport+ and car is in MDM. Tires are PS4S with manual transmission.

Not sure if it is driver error at this point or an issue with the car. I have launched only about 5 times since getting it at the end of November.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

I've only used launch control in mine twice (manual transmission) and I got bad wheel hop both times.

Tires properly inflated?

You following the correct procedure?

Allow the vehicle to warm up to operating temperature.

Activate M Dynamic Mode by pressing the stability control button.

Engage the clutch and shift into first gear.

Press the accelerator down as far as it will go without releasing the clutch pedal.

Hold both pedals in place until after the engine’s rpm adjusts and a “Launch Control Ready” message is displayed in the check control.

Release the clutch within six seconds and upshift quickly when indicated by the shift lights.

The above from this link:

https://www.bmwblog.com/2023/04/08/h...ol-manual-bmw/

About all I can offer is if the launch control system offers it experiment with different launch control RPMs.

I definitely had launch control engaged correctly and everything worked as expected except for the wheel hop. I wasn't aware though that you can change the RPM. Do you know how that is done?

My only other car with launch control was my Hellcat (equipped with a 8-speed automatic) and launch control RPMs had some range of adjustment.

And remembering this I offered the advice to change the RPMs.

However, I reviewed the section on launch control in my M2's digital owners manual and there was no mention of being able to adjust/change the RPMs.

So it may not be possible to change the RPMs. I watched a video of an M2 in launch control mode and the video clipped out the speedo and tach.

Also, it appears the video of launch being used is that of an automatic equipped car.

If RPMs can't be adjusted and if tire pressures are correct about all you can do then is experiment with tire pressures.

I'd hazard a guess with wheel hop higher pressure would be better as the tires would be more likely to spin rather than spin/grip/spin/grip which can produce wheel hop.

Also, besides finding the optimum pressure, a Maximum Performance summer tyre such as the MP4S or PZ4 is not going to reach optimum grip until over 40C (104F). Varying degrees of slip-grip are likely at lower tread temperatures.

What temp do the tires need to be? Mine are usually 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit when i launch.

They won’t grip particularly well at that tyre temp, slip-grip and wheel hop is likely. Ambient temps of 20C (68F) should see tyres warmed to at least 30C (86F) with a bit of driving. As mentioned above, tyre temps of 40C (104F) will see the PS4Ss reaching optimum grip.

Thats a touch on the low side for the oem tires. If you have drag radials, different story.

Awesome info, thanks! I will get the tires a lot warmer and try again.

I have the OEM PS4S, ill up the PSI (and the temp) and try again. Maybe start at 36 PSI and go from there.

Guys it's February. Tires will never get up to temp fast enough during a short drive.

Had the issue of severe wheel hop on launch for my F87 M2C and pretty much gave up on getting a good launch. People said it was because the F87 only used one bushing on the rear subframe and that a turner diff mount would fix it. Wheel hop was worse in the rain and slightly better in the dry.

Haven’t tried launching my G87 yet but I had severe wheel hop when initiating a rolling burnout when it was raining (sport+, dsc off, sport suspension) in first gear but it slid smoothly in second and third. My car had around 2000 miles at the time. A friend of mine said that he has aggressive wheel hop on his G82 in first and second gear and his tires has around 6000 miles and the issue is present both in the rain and dry.

Maybe something to do with tire pressures and heat?

Another thing to keep in mind is left over salt/sand/debris from winter. If the road surface is not consistently clean then traction will be inconsistent - another cause of wheel hop.

At this time of the year with pavement temperatures (in my part of the world) less than 50F it will be tough to get tires to 100F for a launch.

Good call man, luckily i live in North Carolina and we havent had snow for a few years now so the road surface is definitely clear.

I feel like i just need to wait till the warm weather gets here so i can get my tires up to 100F temps and try again.

Thanks again to everyone coming with advice.

Cheers!
