EDIT: STRIKE THE RWD. It's not sharing the Hyundai Genesis coupe platform. My bad. I read too much into the LLN article's mention of the Genesis.

If I buy a 135i, and I get pown'ed at a stop light by some snot nosed 16 year-old in a stock KIA, I'll be pissed.

Kia is showing a near-production concept car with 289 lb-ft. of torque and 290 horsepower from a twin turbo engine. If they can manage to come in with 200 pounds less weight than a 135i, it's gonna be quick.

It's sister car, the RWD Hyundai Genesis coupe, is expected to have an optional limited slip rear diff. If that made it into the Kia Koup, I'd really be pissed.

FWIW, AutoWeek reported that today and said the Kia was FWD. If it's FWD it'll be a handful with that much torque.

It's still a Kia. BMW doesn't continually beat the (pretty darned lofty) competition in comparos because they are lucky. If they actually offer that car, or enter the near sport market, they'll need practice and experience, which they have neither of in this sector.

Not saying that to be snotty... it's a fact. As other's come close to meeting what BMWs have to offer, BMW raises the bar.. which is a win-win for us. :smile:

I hunted that article down, and yep, autoweek is saying it is FWD, and it is not based upon the same chassis as the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

I think it looks pretty good. It is still a Kia though.
I wonder what the reactions would be if someone photoshopped a Toyota or Mitsubishi badge on it. Or for that matter Chevy bow tie.

Hmmm. Overemphasizing horsepower is like judging the attractiveness of a woman on the basis of the size of her tits instead of the whole person. And when you look at the whole package, a Kia is still no BMW.

I agree that it's clearly not in the same league as the 1er, but I'm liking this emphasis on smaller, more economical sports cars. I think it's a benefit for the industry as a whole, as competition will drive the prices for better-performing cars down.

I was gonna say, that doesn't look much like a RWD chassis. Looks similar to a VW Eos.

That Hyundai RWD coupe will supposedly be pretty good though. I doubt I'd pass up a chance to test drive one.

IF Hyundai put the twin turbo and the brembos from the Kia in their RWD Genesis coupe with limited slip, I'd give it a test drive.

Sure, the Hyundai could only at best be 9/10th's of what a BMW would be. But it could also be 1/2 the price.

(note: I'm not interested in arguing the exact percents of a car that doesn't exist.)

Actually Hyundai has been working closely with Bosch and the brakes on their large cars are quite good (as well as their stability control). What Hyundai/Kia are still behind on though, is specific power from their drivetrains (catching up quickly - the 3.x V6 in the Sonata and Azera are great engines), transmissions (they had been using Mitsus five speeds), and chassis dynamics in my opinion.

That is the same engine that is in the new EVO. That is the world engine that was codeveloped with Mitsu, Chrysler, and Hyundai.

I never drove an SRT-4, was it a handful to drive because of the FWD and the power it was producing?
