Do I need to worry about my stock turbos on MHD?
Just recently installed the VRSF intercooler on my e90 and have the catless downpipes ordered as well as MHD stage 2+ ready to install as soon as I get the downpipes on. My car has right around 100k miles on it and I know the stock turbos have been known to go out around there from time to time. I was wondering if any of yall have had any experience with failing turbos while running higher psi from the tune, or have any advice for milking the most mileage out of them possible. I’m not targeting any crazy high boost pressures only 15-17psi but this is also my first time tuning the car and don’t want to blow anything up if it is avoidable.

I'll jump in with my experience and overall modding opinion with N54. If you are a worrier and have no wallet or DIY skills...stop now. If you want to have some fun, can spend a little cash and can turn a wrench...proceed.
Many add MHD and get 10's of thousands of miles on stock turbos. I've been MHD modded 2+ for 60 thousand miles on stock turbos (88k to 148k) with no turbo problems - boosting strong. I've also thoroughly maintained the car and fix anything that breaks or leaks. A good rule is maintenance before mods. If you can't afford the maintenance or basic repairs, don't start adding boost. If the car is strong and maintenance is up to date, I say boost away, have fun. |

Good to know the stock turbos are still holding strong. I’m no expert mechanic but can fix most basic things that break. I put in the intercooler/downpipes myself and as far as maintenance goes have replaced several coolant hoses, plugs and coils, and oil. Hopefully all goes as planned…

Hi,
Some MHD user like me experienced some turbo whine @low rpm... I had whine as soon as i tried V10 stage 1+ 2 years ago even if turbo was still boosting strong. I changed turbos one years ago ans same thing happens no whine with v7 but whine came back with V10 stage 2 . Turbo bench on my first turbo set shows a very small intake compressor wheel damage like an orange peel effect. I Imagine that V10 wich keep boost high after 6000rpm is more hard for our Turbo. My car has now a faint whine at low rpm but boost fine so i stay like that. I have another turbo set with upgraded compressor wheel in my garage for a future update. |

Do any of yall know which MHD version is the best to use? I know you mentioned the v10 having more boost at higher rpm, but what’s the difference in that one and say the v6 map?

Most people seem to like the V7 the best. It’s hard to say what’s overall “best” but they felt strong and most people’s cars ran great on the 7
