2008 335xi base coupe Steering wheel functions not working

All the buttons including my paddle shifters in my don’t work would anyone know where to start looking for a problem like this the person I bought it from installed custom things for his sub so I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it but I haven’t found any info on this PLS HELP!

you need to remove steering wheel and check if signals from wheel is going thru slip ring
sometime when steering rack is removed the slip ring is not limited by rack and can be broken if wheel rotated more than allowed
