2A87-88 exhaust VANOS mechanism

Hi, N52 2009 this error is reappearing on DME:

2A87-88 exhaust VANOS mechanism

No check engine light though, should I be concerned and do something about it or no?

You tried swapping out the two vanos solenoids to see if fault follows?

FYI I think there is a recall for vanos bolts on that car.

Check the conditions in which it is triggered. You don't have a check engine because it might not be present. I had a 2a99 code show up every hundred miles or so on cold start up. No engine light. Fixed it by replacing vanos solenoids at 125k or so miles.

If you're using inpa you can check the engine temp and RPMs. Also, check the vanos advancement as you engage the throttle. If you see the cams are moving, everything should be functioning fine.

If you end up replacing the solenoid, this is one of a few parts that people recommend using the actual BMW item. There is procedure for cleaning and testing their electrical resistance, but some people say it does nothing.

I had problems with one of mine, that was due (at least in part) to someone having removed the plastic cage that holds the oil filter in place. I would make sure yours is installed and that the o-rings are intact. Then I would change your oil and filter with BMW recommended oil (I used Castrol European formula). You might get lucking and get a few more years out of your Vanos solenoids.
