Sunroof sliding shade question

I'm getting ready to pull the headliner, pillars, package tray and sunroof shade from my 325i to get them recovered. I notice on the sunshade slider covering it is not the same foam backed fabric as the headliner and pillars, it's more like a short nap carpeting similar to the trunk floor carpeting but in a lighter gray. My 330i sunshade is covered with the same fabric as the headliner. Does anyone else have this type of material on their sunshade? From the total lack of things done to this car I can't imagine anyone replaced it so wondering if this is just OE on lower models? Any input appreciated.

I think your sunroof is missing the headliner cover material. The material should be the same as the headliner fabric. A previous owner probably experienced the shade material deamination and pulled it entirely off, leaving the foam-based adhesive. The slider shade substrate is black plastic. The foam adhesive probably was scraped off. Maybe even treated with some chemical remover (like acetone) to knock down the dry, flakey foam residue.

Ask me how I know...

Yes, how? Inquiring minds want to know It's definitely not the slider with the covering ripped off, these are covered but with a different type of fabric more like felt or short nap carpet. The Q is how did it get here. If it's not OE to the 325i is it OE on another car? Do other models share the same sunroof? I can't imagine someone covering with a different type of material but for sure it's not the foam or substrate of one with the covering torn off.

Mine delaminated one day in July last year when I was parking at BWI airport for a meeting. The headliner material on the slider got caught up in the headliner surround of the opening. I had to pull it off to get the sunroof closed. The adhesive had just dried out. I later scraped it off and got down to a whitish napp material. I wiped that down with acetone to get the remaining glue knocked down.

We have the same car, a 2006 325i with beige interior. Based on your Pic, a previous owner did something to your shade other than replace the OE headliner fabric.

Efthree have you ever removed the panel? So that's what yours looks like now, a kind of light gray short nap? I'm leery of this part of the job because it involves pulling the glass and little locking tabs on the slider that look extremely easy to break and/or lose. Oh well, in for a penny in for a pound :P

I haven't messed with it. It seems straight forward to remove. I still have the piece of fabric. It's last on my refurb list.

I pulled the sunroof and panel at the wrecker, and it was really easy to remove. Can't say how the installation part goes though...

Well got the sunshade out. Looks like I was wrong and someone did actually recover it with this felty looking fabric, I can tell from the uneven cuts around the edge that it's no factory job. I'm amazed because with all the work I've done on this car from top to bottom inside out this is the first evidence I've found of someone actually fixing/replacing anything.

Well believe it or not it looks better than having it without any cover. My sunroof liner fell off a frw years ago and haven’t had a chance to mess with it. Looks bad but nobody can see it except me. 😂. I need to replace my whole headliner as well. Its sagging from some areas. 🙄

Yeah other than not matching the headliner fabric it didn't look bad and who looks at the roof. I would just leave it if it wasn't for the rear part of the headliner and the C pillars flopping around in the breeze, and stains on the A pillars, doing them so have to do everything.

Now there's one tiny part I need. the little teflon slider that runs in the track is disintegrated on one side, and of course it's not sold apart from the whole slider ear assembly front and back.

it's PN 54137157380 for anyone interested.

I hate sunroofs so much. I had the chance to buy a slicktop E92 328i a year or so ago... in hindsight really should have bought it!

Yeah I rarely open it I just roll the windows down. Like you said tho it came apart fairly easy, hopefully it'll be the same in reverse.

Glad I didn't misrepresent anything there!
Assembly seems like it will be straightforward other than getting the glass leveled out.

The glass will level out automatically since you take the glass out when it's in raised position. All you have to do is put the screws back in and it will level automatically to the previous position.

I have never had any issues with my sunroof in my E90 other than the liner falling off. Knock on wood 🪵 ☝️😊
