2006 325i Water leak into trunk battery compartment.

Hey y’all hoping someone has some idea where this water is coming from.

Alternator died, had it rebuilt and they said it looked like it failed due to being overworked. No idea if that could be caused by this, would be nice to know that too

Was replacing battery as well and noticed it was slightly damp when pulling it out.

There wasn’t any standing water but some signs of it in the past. Current situation was more like the battery was outside and had the smallest amount of morning dew on it.

Started looking more and noticed this trail of what seems to be rust coming down the far side of the battery compartment.

Live in the PNW and we’re gonna start getting more and more rain so hoping to figure this out asap.

Car was well taken care of by single previous owner but he did have it parked for 4 years during Covid under a tree so tons of these rubber seals are moldy and falling apart.

First thought was tail light gaskets but those would be at the front of the battery compartment.

I tried pulling back the carpeting but couldn’t find how to release it.

Any help is greatly appreciated

If not the taillight gaskets, then the rear sunroof drains.
