Where do you put this metal lock/ring when changing differential seal?

Hello, I have been looking to change my differential seals (both outputs) in near future and i have been looking into it.

I noticed the product from Geuniue BMW comes with a metal lock ring whereas Corteco doesn't.

Can I re-use this metal ring or is it even needed? I already watched several "How To" guide on changing these output seals on E90 but i couldn't find any one using/mentioning it.

Thank you!

I believe that’s intended to replace the lock ring on the splined end of the axle shaft that the seal receives.
