N53 - runs nicely then misfires when restarted
Can anyone please help!
It is a 330i and has had injectors, high press fuel pump, plugs and coil packs. It has also had a new rocker cover gasket however it does seem to be leaking a bit of oil into the valley. The problem I have is that it starts up fine and runs smoothly, I then took it short drive, just a couple of miles. When I got home I let it idle for a bit which was fine. I then stopped the engine. When I started it a few minutes later it was running badly, with a misfire and the smooth running values were all over the place on various cylinders. There are no error codes coming up on my reader and the fule pressure is good and withing raange for both pumps One of the plugs had oil around it so I cleaned that out and it then ran fine. But I had the same issue, took it around the block. turned off the engine then on restarting it was misfiring. I checked the plug for oil around it but it was clear this time! However, I don't think it was related to the plug having oil on it as I just went out an started it from cold and it is running fine. So it must be temperature related ? Any ideas please, the car is driving me nuts !! Last edited by lambo911; 12-13-2024 at 07:30 AM.. |

I have been fiddling with the car and I am still no clearer on what the problem is. Today I went for a 20 mile drive and it was running really well. I stopped and checked the smooth running values and they were lovely and all within tolerance.
When I got home it wasn’t running quite so well with a slight misfire when blipping the throttle. I disconnected each coil pack in turn and cylinder 6 seemed to be the one with the problems. This was the cylinder that had the oil around the spark plug. I then checked all the plugs and they were not as expected at all. Cylinder 1 and 2 were very sooty and cylinder 6 looked ok. I cleaned the plugs up a bit and swapped them around, started the car and it ran fine again. I need to take it for another run and check the plugs again I guess. Any idea why they look like this ? Could it be the injectors. They are not leaking as the car starts up cleanly from cold in the morning albeit the exhaust smells like it is running rich. |

I suggest you need to take the car to a trustworthy indy who has the BMW software that can diagnose the engine while running. Otherwise I think you'll just end up throwing parts at it...
