How to remove rear ashtray?

The whole ashtray, not the insert. I stuffed the damn thing full of quarters, and one fell behind the tray. Doh! Now it won't close.

Anyone know how?

There's a DIY for replacing the ashtray with a sunglass holder.

that DIY is for the front ashtray, not the rear one.

That link will take you to the realoem page dealing with the rear ashtray. The picture makes it look like the unit might just pop out.

That realoem page doesn't have enough detail.

Hey Teceng, take some pics so I can figure it out, and I'll let you know how to pop it back in!

I hope you dont engineer anything important like bridges or buildings. Your obviously not an engineer for BMW.

Actually, I spent all of 30 seconds trying to get it back in and gave up. I don't sit in the back seat so I lost interest. I guess I'll have to go out and fix it just to prove to myself I can do it

Stopped by the dealer, and they seemed to think I'd have to take the whole center console apart. Gonna try to fish it out with some double sided tape or something..

try using the tape attached to a angled fork or knife.

This is an old thread, but no one ever came up with a fix. After having one of my small children knock off my rear ashtray, I had to fix this tonight.

1. Take the ashtray and slide the top rails/guides in 1st

2. Now the bottom fitting will reattach by placing your finger on the top and bottom of the tray which will bend the ashtray slider enough to fit the bottom onto the holes.

Crazy hard and it only fits one way...

I removed console, then took all a part and was able to figure out the rest.
Good luck
